The World Affairs Council is a membership-based organization
which creates forums for discussion of critical world issues.
ILO
The International Labour Organization is the UN specialized
agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally
recognized human and labour rights.
UNICEF
Created by the United Nations General Assembly in
1946 to help children after World War II in Europe, UNICEF was first known
as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. In 1953,
UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations system, its task being
to help children living in poverty in developing countries. Its name was
shortened to the United Nations Children's Fund, but it retained the acronym
"UNICEF," by which it is known to this day.
International Court of Justice
International Court of Justice is the judicial organ
of the UN.
Council of the EU
The Council of the European Union is a Community institution
exercising several powers including legislative, economic and budgetary
decisions and defines and implements the common foreign and security policy
for Europe.
Council of Europe
The Council of Europe is an intergovernmental organisation
which aims:
- to protect human rights, pluralist democracy and
the rule of law;
- to promote awareness and encourage the development
of Europe's cultural identity and diversity;
- to seek solutions to problems facing European society
(discrimination, xenophobia, intolerance, environmental protection, human
cloning, AIDS, drugs, organised crime, etc.);
- to help consolidate democratic stability in Europe
by backing political, legislative and constitutional reform.
European Parliament
The European Parliament represents, in the words of
the 1957 Treaty of Rome, 'the peoples of the States brought together in
the European Community'. Some 375 million European citizens in 15 countries
are now involved in the process of European integration through their 626
representatives in the European Parliament.
South Asian Association for Regional
Cooperation (SAARC)
SAARC provides a platform for the peoples of South
Asia to work together in a spirit of friendship, trust and understanding.
It aims to accelerate the process of economic and social development in
Member States. Members: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and
Sri Lanka.
Association of South-East Asian Nations
(ASEAN)
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN
was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok by the five original Member
Countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand
and now also includes Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
It seeks to promote greater interaction and cooperation between South-East
Asian nations.
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting
Companies (OPEC)
An organization to promote "greater co-operation"
(read: price fixing) and closer relations between the world's leading petroleum
exporting countries. Members: Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya,
Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
Commonwealth of Independent States:
Executive Committee, and Stat Committee
Governmental organization founded on December 8, 1991,
composed of former Soviet republics, and a partial successor to the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Members: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus,
Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,
Ukraine,and Russia.
Organization of American States (OAS)
Regional cooperation organization for nations of the
western hemisphere.
Asian Development Bank (ADB)
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is based in Manila
and like the World Bank, it loans money to member countries, sometimes
at subsidized rates, for developmental purposes. Its Asian membership includes
most of the countries of East, Southeast, and South Asia, as well as Afghanistan
and Turkey.
World Trade Organization (WTO)
International body that promotes and enforces the
provisions of trade laws and regulations.
World Bank
International Bank for Reconstruction and Development
or World Bank's main purpose is "to assist in the reconstruction and development
of territories of members by facilitating the investment of capital for
productive purposes [and] to promote private foreign investment by means
of guarantees or participation in loans [and] to supplement private investment
by providing, on suitable conditions, finance for productive purposes out
of its own capital..."
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
International economic organization whose purpose
is to promote international monetary cooperation to facilitate the expansion
of international trade.
United States: House of Representatives, Senate, and White House
World Peace Foundation
The World Peace Foundation is a private, nonprofit
organization established in 1910 by Edwin Ginn to promote greater peace
in the world.
Carnegie Endowment
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is
a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between
nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States.
Established in 1910 by Andrew Carnegie.
