There are two internship (paid) and ten mentor (unpaid) positions available in the Office of Black Student Advising. These internship positions present a valuable opportunity to get some experience in working in the Student Life area. The Interns serve as the primary liaison between the student body and Student Life, more specifically, the Advisor to Black Students. The Mentors work with small groups of first-year students to welcome and connect them to the Dartmouth community. Successful applicants should be in good standing, well organized, creative, self-motivated, able to work well independently, as well as be a team player.
2 Community Coordinators (PAID - 5
hours/week)
*Juniors and Seniors ONLY
The coordinators will work individually and collectively to explore the multiple intersections of identity for Black students and provide leadership and encouragement to all students in the community. The Community Coordinators will also work closely with the Advisor in organizing major programs and events initiated by the office and in collaboration with other campus organizations and offices (i.e. Connect '12, Community Dinners, Black Women's Forum, Black Men at Dartmouth, Black History Month, Commencement Celebration, Black Leadership Council, etc.). They will also be responsible for monitoring the OBSA Blitz account, bulletin and updating the OBSA Web site, including the community profile spotlight. The Community Coordinators will also convene the Black Leadership Council (BLC), a structure that provides a forum for leaders of Black related organizations to communicate and collaborate.
Connect Upperclass Mentors (UNPAID - 2 hours/week)
Mentors will be assigned small groups of first-year students and are expected to be in contact with students in their group on a regular basis. Mentors will also keep record of all contacts and are expected to report regularly on the status of their group members. This position requires approximately a 1-2 hour per week commitment. Applicants who are on campus both fall and winter are preferred.
The Community Coordinator position is a paid internship. The salary is based on an hourly rate of $8.00. Each Intern will be required to work a maximum of five (5) hours a week over a ten (10) week term. The annualized salary is $1,200. The internship is available to both work study and non-work study students.
