I. Library Services

A. Reference Assistance

We encourage you to ask for help with
any aspect of your library research.

B. Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services

  • Interlibrary Loan Service - books which are not available in the Dartmouth Library System may be requested with DartDoc. It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks to receive an item through interlibrary loan.

  • Document Delivery Department - provides photocopies of articles from journals in the College Library's collections and obtains articles and books from outside Dartmouth.

  • Basic Information on the services provided by the Biomedical Libraries is available on the Biomedical Libraries Web. Additional information on other libraries in the Dartmouth College Library system is also available.

II. General Library Information Sources

  • Dartmouth Library Catalog - includes the titles of books listed by author, title and subject. Other materials are listed by title and general subject. The catalog shows the call numbers, locations of items and circulation status. The Dartmouth Library Catalog does not list the articles in the journal. To search for articles, you must use other databases available in the Dartmouth eResources.

  • Electronic Resources - provides access to many databases in addition to the Dartmouth Library Catalog. Dictionaries, encyclopedias and article databases are included. Specific databases which are relevant to your research project are listed below.

  • Electronic Journals - The Dartmouth Library Catalog provides direct access to selected journals available on the web in full text. The Biomedical Libraries have compiled a selected list of electronic journals of relevance to their clientele with access information.

  • Electronic Textbooks - The Biomedical Libraries have compiled a selected list of electronic textbooks of relevance to their clientele with access information.

III. Library Databases

  • Ovid MEDLINE is the primary Biomedical database, covering the years from 1966 to date. Updated monthly. OVID Documentation is available.

  • PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's search interface for MEDLINE.

  • BIOSIS is the primary database for biology and contains some medical information as well. The OVID system provides access from 1996 to date. Earlier years of BIOSIS are available through the reference service at Dana Biomedical Library.

  • Web of Science includes three databases, Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. The databases are updated weekly and can be searched by subject, author, article title or journal title. This database also allows retrieval of articles which have cited a paper since its publication.

  • Wilson Web is a collection of databases that may be searched singly or in combination. The databases include: Applied Science & Technology Abstracts, Art Index, Biography Index, Biological & Agricultural Index, Book Review Digest, Business Periodicals Index, General Science Abstracts, Humanities Index, Index to Legal Periodicals, Readers Guide Abstracts, and Social Sciences Index.
