More than MEDLINE: Resources of Interest to Clinicians

Medline is the National Library of Medicine's premier medical journal database. It is usually the clinician's first stop for medical information, but there are other important databases and resources of interest that should not be overlooked. Try the following resources when you want to know:

Who cited my paper (or another article or author)?

  • Web of Science

    Web of Science / ISI Citation Indexes corresponds to the printed Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts ; Humanities Citation Index. This version of Science Citation Index is an expanded one and covers 5,300 journals in the basic and applied sciences, including medicine, engineering, mathematics and computer science, from 1988 to present. The file is updated weekly, and includes abstracts of the articles from 1991 to present. The other citation indexes provide additional coverage of about 3000 journals in the social sciences, arts and humanities. The Web of Science search interface features include cited reference searching, keyword searching, and related record linking.

Where can I find meeting abstracts?

    BIOSIS Previews (Biological Abstracts) is one of the leading sources of bibliographic references to the life science journal literature. Coverage is international, and includes agriculture, biochemistry, biomedicine, biotechnology, botany, ecology, microbiology, pharmacology, and zoology.

Where can I find full-text newspaper articles or medico-legal information?

    LEXIS-NEXIS Universe is a web-based news and business information service that contains more than 13,500 sources. These include regional, national and international newspapers, news wires, magazines, trade journals and business publications. It also includes major archives of federal and state case law, continuously updated statutes of all 50 states, and state and federal regulations. Legal news and law journals are also available. Files in LEXIS-NEXIS are updated throughout the day.

      ABI/Inform (Proquest Direct) indexes and abstracts articles from over 1,000 general business, management and international business publications. Subject coverage includes: accounting and auditing, banking, data processing and information management, economics, finance, management, Health care, human resources, insurance, law and taxation, management science, marketing, advertising, sales management, new product development, personnel, employee benefits, and labor relations, public administration and government, real estate, and telecommunications.

    • AIDSLINE

      AIDSLINE® (AIDS information onLINE) Citations about Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and related topics are derived from the MEDLINE, HealthSTAR, and BIOETHICSLINE files, and the meeting abstracts from the International Conferences on AIDS, and other AIDS-related meetings, conferences and symposia. Citations and abstracts from newsletters and special AIDS journals are also included.

      AIDSDRUGS is a dictionary of chemical and biological agents currently being evaluated in the AIDS clinical trials covered in the companion AIDSTRIALS database. Each record represents a single substance and provides information such as standard chemical names, synonyms and trade names, CAS Registry Numbers, protocol ID numbers, pharmacological action, adverse reactions and contraindications, physical/chemical properties, and manufacturers' names. Agents which were tested in closed or completed trials are included. A bibliography of relevant articles is also included.

      BIOETHICSLINE covers the ethical, legal and public policy issues surrounding health care and biomedical research. Topics include euthanasia and other end-of-life issues, organ donation and transplantation, allocation of health care resources, patients' rights, professional ethics, new reproductive technologies, genetic intervention, abortion, behavior control and other mental health issues, AIDS, human experimentation, and animal experimentation. Citations are derived from the literature of law, religion, the social sciences, philosophy, and the popular media as well as the health sciences. The file is produced by the Bioethics Information Retrieval Project of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University.

Clinical Pharmacology Online is sponsored by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center's Department of Clinical Computing and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
