Therefore there is also a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Name Directory, a ValleyNet (a local ISP) name directory and a Dartmouth Alumni Name Directory. The DHND will come up again later on. DND has more fields than just your name. Relevant fields we use in our scripts and for use in other resources: Department, Affiliation, unique number id.L4 N 0 $Dartmouth Name Directory (continued)$% % Pros: One userid and password for 'all' electronic resources Cons: Security issues, folks don't realize that their email userid and password enables you into lots of other information. We need to continue to educate people to NOT share their passwords with others.h86L k Kerberos Authentication Web pages developed for installation and debugging: < http://www.dartmouth.edu/~kerberos/ > Two pieces of software need to be installed on a desktop machine: SideCar and KClient 84)W4)W6 E yT6Y1!#Kerberos Authentication (continued)$$ How it works: KClient presents an authentication dialog box. It combines your name and your computer's IP address to produce an unforgable ticket with a timeout associated with it. This ticket can prove to a remote server that you are a valid user until the expiration time of the ticket. SideCar is placed in your computers' start-up folder. It listens for authentication requests from web servers. When a web server request is initiated, SideCar checks the identity of a user (looks at kerberos ticket). If a valid user, SideCar allows access to web page. If not, it asks KClient to present the authentication dialog box. If a valid authentication, SideCar sends the ticket back to the requesting web server. If not valid, error message is generated.0 k ( + E _ 2"#Kerberos Authentication (continued)$$ Pros: Once installation is successful, access is seamless. One login in the morning to obtain a valid Kerberos ticket. This ticket is set to have a maximum life of 8 hours. So for the rest of the day, no logins required for any Kerberos restricted resources. Visual clues: lock icon, open or closed. Floating window for valid ticket with name. Versions available for both Macintosh and Windows platforms. ^6g w B0#Kerberos Authentication (continued)$$ ECons: Timeouts on public machines. People forget to close their ticket. Security risk. Unix machines - need a special version of KClient for each version of Unix. Firewalls & ISPs Users need to install this software. "Test KClient" button, web pages with error messages spelled out, but still lots of questions since there are so many kinds of machines and setups out there. Some confusion for DND and DHND users. They are in both name directories. If they have a ticket for Hitchcock, but they are trying to use a Dartmouth resource, there is more of a chance for confusion. 8?>L W ^ Restricted Web Pages mod SideCar an apache server module which we wrote in-house. This allows us to restrict access to web pages based on a list of users, a realm (dartmouth.edu vs. hitchcock.org), or a resource.& b P= Restricted Web Pages (continued)! ! -We use this method in those cases in which IP access is not possible, OR publishers insist on giving us a userid and password, OR special software is necessary to access the resource. We use this method for about 30 journals. Examples: < http://dcisweb.dartmouth.edu/ejournals/dh/ejournals.html > .>i yTyTyTyT yT yT yTyTyTyTyTyT%yT%*O< Restricted Web Pages (continued)! ! How it works: The owner of a web page creates a .htaccess file in the directory. They insert an appropriate command. Example of a .htacess file using mod sidecar. You can restrict individual files as well as the whole directory. <B2 K \ 4% Restricted Web Pages (continued) ! Pros: We used to have to put a note in the catalog record that said 'go talk to the reference librarian for a userid and password to access this resource.' Difficult for folks offsite and difficult for all the reference librarians to keep track. Cons: Had to set up a mailto:Library-EJhelp email account for login troubles. Have to set up mod SideCar on every web server we have. We rely on 'trust'. Hopefully Dartmouth folks aren't going to email their friends the Dartmouth userid and password. hbn 6 D2PERL scripts to Validate Users Create a perl script on a unix machine: /usr/local/sbin/apache/perl/ejaccess.pl The PERL script is basically a big IF statement. Catalog URL is: < http://www.dartmouth.edu/perl/dcis/ej-access?NATURE > If user is within the Dartmouth or Hitchcock IP zone, we pass them through to: < http://www.nature.com/ >. If they are out of the zone, but have a valid Kerberos ticket, then we point them to a restricted web page at: < http://dcisweb.dartmouth.edu/ejournals/dh/nature.html > This page in turn lists a series of URLs to scripts which are tied to one userid and password. Each of these userid/password combinations allows only one user at a time. :KK""az] ' % 3 < N 8 yT]yTyTtG5*PERL scripts to Validate Users (continued)$+ + yPros: Ability to tailor at will. We often combine PERL scripts, restricted web pages and Kerberos authentication. Cons: If something changes and publisher doesn't notify us, it breaks for everyone. Depending on where you are, scripts may act differently depending on access rules for the resource. Sometimes you'll get asked for a userid and password, sometimes you won't.fnQ"6Z $ H6Web Authentication Proxy Server gOnly appropriate for web access to IP-based resources. < http://auth-proxy.dartmouth.edu/help.html > `; yT;d8)+Web Authentication Proxy Server (continued)$, , How it works: Dependent on the web browser you are using. Only valid Dartmouth users can access it. 06 E 9*+Web Authentication Proxy Server (continued), , 7Pros: Allows access from off-site. No need to pass out userids and passwords to individual users. Cons: How does a user know this is appropriate? User needs to configure his browser AND remember to turn it off. Access based on Kerberos authentication. Anyone who has an entry in the Dartmouth Name Directory (DND) or the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Name Directory (DHND) can access the resource with their current blitzmail userid and password. The script then passes the user through to the resource and 'hides' the institutional userid and password from them. This option involves Information Systems writing a script. An example of this is the SilverPlatter database 'Geobase' at: < http://www.dartmouth.edu/perl/dcis/ej-access?SPIRS >. #7y$"7 "x""aD p yTK9,Electronic Journals at Dartmouth (continued)-! - Purchasing preference (continued): 3. An example of an IP-restricted resource is the Encyclopedia Britannica at: < http://search.eb.com/ > Note: Users from off-campus can now use the Dartmouth Web Authentication Proxy Server to access these resources. 4. Individual registration that requires unique userids and passwords for each user. #JV#" J"""U aL ^ yT;,,Electronic Journals at Dartmouth (continued)-! - All electronic journals are entered directly into our library catalog. When cataloging electronic journals, our preference is for the URL to point directly to journal holdings information. An example, the journal "Cell Calcium" at < http://www.idealibrary.com/cgi-bin/links/toc/ceca > points to the electronic holdings for the journal. Each link in turn points to a table of contents for the particular issue. Linking to the journal directly is always preferred over linking to a top-level page in which the user then needs to find and select the journal she wants to use. We'll also link to a title page, current issue, publisher page if need be, whatever is available. We have a web page set up to explain how to search the catalog for electronic journals. $"al yTL:,Electronic Journals at Dartmouth (continued)-! - @Many of the subject libraries have set up individual subject web pages which include names of journals and URLs. < http://www.dartmouth.edu/~biomed/resources.htmld/ejournals.htmld/ > Ideally, a Dartmouth user will be working on their desktop or public machine.
