THINGS TO DO!The relationship should NOT rely on money. The time, not the money, that you spend on your little sibling is what is important! The following list comprises just a few suggestions, some of which involve money. Also, remember to ask your little sibling. Chances are he or she has live here longer than you have, and is probably your best resource! Also, you can call the chamber of commerce in the town where your little sibling lives to find out about monthly events which they sponser. FALLApple Picking - At the Poverty Lane Orchard, W. Leb, 448-1511. Canoeing - A great way to see the Fall colors. Rent a canoe at Ledyard! Ph: 643-6709. Dartmouth Football - Go to the Tucker Foundation at least two days in advance, and reserve free tickets! Games on the Green - Soccer, Frisbee, and tag football are always fun. BBBS is currently trying to establish a stockpile of sporting goods available to be checked out. Homecoming Bonfire on the Green - Who doesn’t like this event? Leaf viewing - Gile Mountain (in Norwich), Mount Cardigan and Queeche Gorge are both great places to see leaves. A great art project is to collect leaves and press them between wax paper to hang them on the wall. Hiking - The DOC guide provides a great list of short day hikes nearby. Two short and easy ones which are close are up the Appalacian Trail (beginning next to Chase Field) to Velvet Rocks or to the fire tower which is atop Gile Mountain (a 15 minute hike from the road) in Norwich. Back to Top WINTERBuild a Snowman on the Green - or make your own snow sculpture! Also check out animal tracks in the snow. A great place to see them is around barlett tower and near the bema. Dartmouth Hockey and Basketball - Reserve free tickets two days in advance of the game at the Tucker Foundation! Ice Skating - Skates are available for rent in the basement of the DOC house at the North end of Occom Pond (or at Thompson arena. BBBS is currently trying to get hockey sticks and pucks to be checked out. Roast Marshmallows - At your place if you have a fireplace, or your little sibling’s. Sledding - Either at the Golf course, or ask your little sibling his or her favorite place. BBBS is currently trying to gather a stockpile of sleds and inner tubes to be checked out. Warm up with hot chocolate at any dining hall afterwards! Skiing - take your little sibling to the skiway and take a ski lesson. This one costs money, so a good day is 99¢ ski day during Winter Carnival. Also, children who live in Lyme get to ski free the entire season! Ph: 795-2143. Swimming - Take a dip at the Athletic Center. Swimming in the Winter–– what a concept! Check bulletins under blitzmail to see times. Back to Top SPRING / SUMMERCanoeing - Once it gets warm, it’s hard to stay away from the river! Rent a canoe at Ledyard. Hiking - The DOC guidebook provides directions to a number of great nearby places. Outdoor Games - Frisbee, soccer, or play volleyball on the court at the River Cluster. Picnic - On the Green, or wherever you want! Shriner’s Parade - Mini cars and scooters parade around the Green during summer term! Swimming - The Ledges and Union River Dam are both great places. See the DOC guidebook for directions. Or, canoe to Titkom Island. Or you can calso try Alunni Gym at 646-2478, Storrs Pond, the Connecticut in "life guarded" areas. Back to Top ANYTIME!Hopkins Center Events - Buy a ticket to a Hop event and get one free for your Little Sibling. This offer is good for all non-sold out events, including movies through the Film Society. To obtain a free ticket, stop by the Tucker Foundation and ask the Administrative Assitant or the Volunteer Coordinator to sign a form for you. Public Library - Go with your little sibling to the public library in their town to read and check out books. Also, you can get a card from the Howe Library in Hanover, down the block from Hanover Hardware, and head there. Visit your Little Sibling at school - Most kids are really excited to “show you off” to their teahcer and friends. They’re always excited to have you waiting for them after school and meet their teacher. Climb Baker Tower - On big weekends, the Tower is open. The Montshire Museum - A consistent favorite among little sibs and big sibs, alike. Obtain free passes from the Tucker Foundation, two days in advance. Ph: 802-649-2200. The Hood Art Museum - Explore the many different and interesting exhibits. Once a month on Sat. morning there’s a special arts day for kids at the Hop. Call for a schedule. Plus, it’s free! Jewelry shop - Make earrings, a necklace, or ring at the jewelry shop in basement of the Hopkins center. There is a $10 initiation fee. Pottery Studio - It’s just across the bridge in Norwich, take a right on the first road and it’s a small white and red brick building just on the left. Rent a Movie - You can rent movies at Jones Media Center in Berry Library or at Videostop (behind Food Stop). Every cluster has a TV and VCR if you don’t. Morton Horse Farm - Dartmouth's own horse farm in Etna, 646-3508 (call ahead of time). Open 10-5 most days. Movies - Call the Nugget (643-2769), Lebanon Cinemas on the Miracle Mile (448-6660), or the Hop (646-2422) to see what’s playing. The Dartmouth Observatory - On a clear night you see forever! Open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30pm to midnight. WDCR and WFRD Station tours - They are glad to show you around during business hours. Just call ahead at 646-3313. The Daily Dartmouth - They are also glad to give tours. Production hours are from late afternoon into the wee hours of the night. Call ahead: 646-2600. Back to Top Games and SportsCollis Center - Shoot pool, play foosball, aire hockey, or arcade games in the basement of Collis. Bowling - At the Astrobowl on Sykes Avenue in White River. Ph: 802-728-4721. Roller Skating - At the Great View Roller Skating Rink in Enfield. Ph: 632-7878. Basketball - Shoot around in the Berry Sports Center. If the main gym is full, try the smaller one upstairs. (Take the staircase to the right of the entrance.) Racquetball - even if you can’t play, it’s fun to just hit the ball around. Racquets and balls are available at no cost in the equipment office in the Berry Sports center. Be sure to reserve a court one day in advance. (Protective eye wear recommended.) Back to Top FOODBaking and Cooking - Much more fun than going out. You can use up extra dba at topside to buy the groceries if you don’t want to spend the cash. A great dinner is to buy the bobalie bread to use as a pizza crust and throw some veggies or meat on there with some cheese and pop it ib the oven. Dining Halls - Even though you may find it boring after a couple of weeks, little sibs love the cafe style, especially for making sundaes. Fast Food - Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Denny’s, Del Taco, and Burger King are all on Route 12A in West Lebanon. Subway is next to Ben & Jerry’s. Pizza - EBA’s, and C&A’s in Hanover, and Pizza Hut, and Papa Gino’s on Route 12A in West Lebanon. Snacks and Sweets - Dunkin Donuts at 12 Main Street, West Lebanon; Ben & Jerry’s, Lou’s and the Bagel Basement in Hanover. Bake cookies, brownies, or whatever your little sibling likes. |
