READ ABOUT CHANGES TO TUCKER TRANSPORTATION

Tucker is in the second term of a merged Tucker-VOX car fleet. The object of the merger is to use transportation resources across campus more efficiently, which will allow the College to provide more transportation, more diversity of transportation and safer transportation overall.

  1. IDENTIFYING TUCKER CARS: All Tucker cars are part of the VOX fleet now. New Tucker cars have VOX plates. Others will change over to VOX plates as the cars are traded in for new ones. Tucker vehicles will eventually also carry “T” stickers on bumpers and keys to identify them as Tucker-assigned cars.
  2. CAPACITY: There are 7 specifically designated Tucker vehicles in the VOX Fleet. Tucker has 5 sedans, 1 small pick-up truck and a mini-van called “The Spirit of ’51”. Tucker also has access by special request to other vans in the VOX system. Some of the routine project carpools will need to use these VOX vans/mini-vans. Also, when a regular Tucker/VOX vehicle is out for repairs or maintenance, a substitute VOX vehicle will be arranged.
  3. RESERVING VEHICLES:
    • The sign-up sheets have been reconfigured to show all cars on one page for each day, rather than a weekly sheet for each car.
    • Reserve all your transportation needs through the Administrative Assistant (AA) here in DCS. Use the reservation book for all the Tucker/VOX permanent vehicles, including the “Spirit” mini-van.
    • See the DCS AA when you need additional van/mini-vans for large van carpool or group events, since those vehicles will come from the larger VOX fleet. The DCS AA will work with the VOX office to get these vans and will inform you of the reservation.
  4. PICKING UP and RETURNING KEYS:
    • Regular Tucker/VOX fleet: Sign out regular designated Tucker/VOX vehicles here at Tucker, as always, and pick up keys here, as usual, during weekday business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm. Before and after hours and on weekends, use Safety and Security, as in the past.
    • Additional, non-Tucker vans or mini-vans, however, are to be picked up at the VOX office in McKenzie Hall. Get the keys there between their business hours of 7:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Arrange with VOX to pick up these keys in advance if you need them after hours or on weekends. Return keys back there during the day or in the drop box by their door after hours.
  5. THERE IS A TRUCK now. It is a small, automatic pick-up and is easy and safe to drive. Use is like a car, but do not use it to transport children EVER, and never EVER carry anyone in the truck bed.
  6. PARKING:
    • Tucker assigned vehicles are still parked in the Gilman Lot on College Street. This includes the 5 sedans, the small truck and the “Spirit” mini-van.
    • Vans and mini-vans, with the exception of the “Spirit” van, are parked in the VOX lot near McKenzie Hall. They should be picked up and returned there.
  7. DRIVING AUTHORIZATION:
    • You need to be driver-authorized to drive any vehicle. You need to be van driver-authorized to drive large vans. Drivers of mini-vans or the pick-up truck do not need to be van driver-authorized.
    • First year students who have been authorized in a department other than Tucker must be reauthorrzed to drive for Tucker as a second department. See the DCS AA for directions on becoming reauthorized.
  8. CHOOSING VEHICLES: For safety reasons, “large” vans now have been modified to carry only 8 people, with special cargo area in the rear. Large vans cost twice as much as 7 passenger mini-vans to rent and are not as safe. In most instances, try to arrange for multiple mini-vans or mini-vans plus sedan/truck instead of one or two large vans. Remember: any authorized driver can drive a mini-van. Large vans are still a good choice on the occasions you are transporting a large group with lots of equipment. When transporting large groups that include children and also equipment, try to arrange it so that children ride in something other than the large vans. The truck is fine to use for any routine transportation as long as you are not transporting children. Try to use the truck when you can, so we leave plenty of sedans for programs such as Big Brother/Big Sister that must transport children.
