Introduction
This guide provides a selective annotated listing
of resources available at Dartmouth College for the social scientific
study of religion, the history of religions.
The reference bibliographer for religion is William
Fontaine. You can contact him by email (william.fontaine@dartmouth.edu)

About the
Collection
- Reference
materials are on Level 1 of Berry Library in the LC Classification.
- The print collection is shelved on the Berry
Lower Level in the LC Classification.
- The Library has a standing order with the major academic presses in
all subject areas. The only items that are excluded are textbooks, reprints,
and non-academic titles limited to regional interest. Follow this link
for a list of our University
Press Approval Plan Publishers.
How to obtain items at Storage
When using the Library Catalog, you will find that
some items are located at the Storage Library. Use the "Select Requested
Item" button in the Catalog to have the item delivered to the Circulation
Desk of your choice. You can also have journal articles from these two
locations delivered to you via Hinman Mail or electronically as PDF files.

Obtaining books not owned by the Library
The fastest way to get books not owned by the Library
is to use Borrow
Direct. You'll often get the book within three working days. You can
keep the book for 28 days, by you cannot renew the book. Another option
is to use Interlibrary
Loan. Although it takes longer to get books this way, you can often
ask for one renewal.
How to find a journal or magazine at
Dartmouth
Do a title
search in the Library Catalog for the title of the journal or magazine
you want. All print and electronic journals at Dartmouth are listed in
the Catalog.
How to obtain journal articles not owned by
the Library
Use Interlibrary
Loan for journal articles not available at Dartmouth.
Document Delivery for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and Staff can have books paged from the stacks
and held at any one of the Library circulation desks on campus. When using
the Library Catalog, you will find that some items are located at the
Storage Library. Use the "Select Requested Item" button in the
Catalog to have the item delivered to the Circulation Desk of your choice.
You can have journal articles copied for you and delivered via Hinman
Mail or electronically as PDF files. For more information, consult these
instructions
for placing document delivery requests.
ENCYCLOPEDIAS
Encyclopedias provide an overview of a given subject and provide a select
bibliography for further study. Below is a selective listing of print

School. This is the primary research encyclopedia in the history

Encyclopaedia Britannica is an excellent resource for information
on religion. The articles are often supplemented with annotated

This is a useful resource when you need to do a comprehensive literature

there is substantial overlap between RLIN Eureka and WorldCat,
it is still a useful resource for comprehensive research.

This is the primary tool for identifying Ph.D. dissertations. This resource corresponds to Dissertation Abstracts International. From 1997 on, you can view the first 24 pages of the dissertation online. With very few exceptions, these are resources that must be obtained on Interlibrary Loan.

simultaneously by marking the check boxes on the main menu page.

Very strong in history of religions and social scientific studies
of religion. Updated quarterly, it indexes articles two or more
pages long in works published in English and other European languages
from the late 19th century to the present. Produced by the Tozzer

it does have unique materials and provides a different interface

NEWS RESOURCES
Use these resources to have tables of contents from your favorite journals

An extensive set of links to religious news in all major media
formats (newspapers, television, radio). Provided by Zondervan Publishing.

Use LexisNexis Academic Universe to search for articles in newspapers,
transcripts, and wire services. Court cases dealing with religion
can be found using the Legal Research section. Updated hourly.

This full text resource is often overlooked, but it is an excellent resource for news and viewpoints in the United States that are often overlooked by the mainstream media. Ethnic groups include Jews, Muslims, Native Americans, African, and more.
|
Search for articles in foreign language newspapers, transcripts,
and wire services in English translation. Most of these articles
are not available elsewhere. It provides full text and summaries
of newspaper articles, conference proceedings, television and radio
broadcasts, periodicals, and non-classified technical reports. The
material in World New Connection is provided to the National Technical
Information Service (NTIS) by the Foreign Broadcast Information
Service (FBIS), a U.S. government agency. |
STATISTICS
One of the best collections of social science data on religion.
|
A collection of over 50,000 statistics on more than 4,200 religions,
denominations, and other religious groups. Data is taken from census
reports, surveys based on samples, and secondary literature.

| This is an excellent resource for finding published statistics.
The
Power Tables Search is the best place to start because it retrieves
an image of the statistical table.
If you do not find what you are looking for in the Power Tables,
search
the Abstracts section which is a much larger dataset. The
abstracts will refer to record numbers that correspond to microfiche
sets held in the Jones Media Center in Baker/Berry Library. The
Library subscribes to the ASI microfiche (American Statistical
Index) and the SRI microfiche (Statistical Reference Index). We
do not get the IIS (Index to International Statistics) microfiche
set. However, the Library does subscribe to many of the publications
indexed by IIS, so check the Library Catalog for holdings.

This is a comprehensive, up-to-date source for US nationwide public
opinion. A full-text retrieval system, the iPoll online database
is organized at the question level, providing the tools to sift
through nearly a half million questions asked on national public
opinion surveys, 1935 to present. In many cases, one can get the
data sets (request them through Baker Berry Reference) for analysis.

Polling the Nations is a comprehensive collection of public opinion
from more than 80 countries around the world. An excellent source
for finding opinion poll information about religious groups and
issues.

This Internet index lists the major sites in religious studies.

CESNER, in Turino, Italy, maintains an extensive library of materials
on new religious movements. About half the materials are in Italian
or French.

STYLE MANUALS

REFERENCE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Managing your references is a critical part of the research process. This
can be a time-consuming and complicated process. Reference management software
programs are tools to help you do this more easily and efficiently. For

RefWorks is an online citation manager that is free for Dartmouth
Students, Faculty, & Staff - just sign
up for your individual account. RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography
and database manager that allows users to create their own personal
database by importing references from text files or online databases.
They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically
format the paper and the bibliography. An online
presentation is available on their web site to get you started.
