XV. Publications and Media
- The Aegis is Dartmouth College's nationally recognized award winning yearbook. The yearbook represents the effort of an entire staff that is dedicated to capturing the beautiful images of Dartmouth College. Each year we attempt to endow the book with the passions, experiences and perspectives of students at the College. The Aegis staff has been rewarded for its dedication and perseverance numerous times. In 1978, 1983, and 1998 the book was awarded certificates of merit in the Graphic Arts Award given by the Printing Industries of America. In 1987, the Aegis was bestowed the PICA Award by Jostens Inc. In 1994, The Aegis was selected as the Best Publication in the Premier Print Award category in the 1995 International Graphics Arts Competition. The Aegis is a close-knit, yet diverse group of students whose single focus is the publication of a complete picture of life at Dartmouth. We are a year-round operation and there is always room for interested students on the photography, layout, and business staffs. Students can devote as much or as little time as their schedules allow. - The Beacon is a conservative student journal and news magazine. It covers a considerable array of national and Dartmouth related topics, giving special emphasis to those such as free speech, affirmative action, and the academic curriculum that bear strongly on the lives of undergraduates. The Beacon's function is twofold - to promote a conservative viewpoint on campus as well as to broaden the student body's awareness of conservatism as a philosophy and political ideology.
- The Black Praxis is an undergraduate news publication dedicated to providing Black news and commentary on the ever-changing events at Dartmouth and around the world. The Black Praxis was established through the efforts of black students who felt the need for a more comprehensive news medium within the College. The office is located on the first floor of Shabazz Hall.
- Cahiers du Dartma is the film journal at Dartmouth. Published once a term, it provides a forum for entertaining musings and incisive criticisms on film (mainstream and not-so-mainstream) and related issues. To get involved, or for more information, blitz "cahiers@dartmouth.edu."
- Cornerstone is a new organization which intends to publish an unbiased perspective which will serve to represent the views and opinions of Dartmouth students while providing timely and accurate information.
- The Dartmouth, America's oldest college newspaper, is the only daily source of news on campus. It's the first place students look when they want to know what's going on. If you enjoy writing, asking questions and knowing the news ahead of time, then The D is the place for you. Freshmen are an integral part of The Dartmouth's production team. Interested students can write news, sports, arts, feature stories or editorials -- no experience necessary! Become one of the most informed students on campus. Meet famous politicians, campus personalities, administrators and local notables all while making great friends and learning about how Dartmouth works. The Dartmouth is completely independent from the College and is a student-run, self-sustaining business. Come by our Open House this fall or drop by any time. - Dartmouth Broadcasting is comprised of AM and FM radio stations operating straight out of Robinson Hall on campus. WDCR (AM) offers shows in Jazz, Blues, Alternative, Hip Hop, Latin, Metal & diverse Talk shows as well as a community oriented shows. WFRD (99 Rock) is one of the most successful and unique radio stations in the nation. Nowhere else can you find a commercial station completely managed by students. You can be trained as a DJ and on the air in as little as a week. Get involved in advertisement. Take a management position and learn what it's like to run a half-million dollar business. If you want to work creatively there are promotions, talk shows, Dartmouth Nightly News and for those sports fanatics you can even create your own sports stories. - Dartmouth Square is a new organization which intends to hold regular discussion meetings, occasional events, and to publish a magazine all related to the creative process.
- A new act has joined the media circus of Dartmouth College. The official "Best New Organization" on campus of 1998-99, continues to grow and expand it's programming and it's viewer-base. DTV! is committed to uniting the campus by promoting the exchange of ideas. To this end, we broadcast new, original programming every Tuesday at 7:30 on Channel 13. In addition we show 12 new movies a month, thanks to the help of the Programming Board. From sports to news, sketch comedy to documentaries DTV! does it. Join us! You can write, produce, shoot, direct, and create your own show, or join a group production. No experience necessary -- DTV! will teach you everything you need to know. - Disquisitions is an undergraduate academic journal that publishes some of the best student papers written each term at Dartmouth. Seeking to publish excellent papers from all disciplines at the College, Disquisitions shows off the quality of some of Dartmouth's top work. The journal acts as a medium for both the expression of our energetic undergraduate thought and the sharing of ideas. Blitz: disquisitions
- The History and Classics Journal cultivates an appreciation for historically related fields and subfields of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Contact: Allen Fromherz.
- In Progress is an on-line photography magazine for serious art students interested in displaying and discussing unfinished work.
- The Jack O'Lantern is the official humor magazine of the College. The Magazine is published once a term, but activities are ongoing. Founded in 1908, the magazine has a rich history of artists, writers, and creative businessmen. The staff is divided into three areas; writing and development of comic ideas, design, artwork and illustration, and the selling of advertisements. Blitz: jacko
- Rocky on the Radio is a Rockefeller Organization that produces a weekly Radio show on politics. Members interview notable speakers who come to campus, engage in live debate, and travel to places around the Northeast to report on live events. If you are interested in politics and radio Rocky on the Radio is the club for you.
- Snapshots of Color provides a medium through which issues concerning people of color can be expressed in a positive literary and artistic form. Members of the Dartmouth community are encouraged to submit poetry, creative writing, and other written materials pertaining to issues of color.
- The Sports Weekly is (we think) the only student-produced weekly sports newspaper in America. Published every Monday morning, the paper is operated solely by Dartmouth students and is free on campus, with our self-supporting income deriving from off-campus subscriptions and local advertising. The purpose of The Sports Weekly is to keep the Dartmouth College community informed of Big Green athletic accomplishments and provide an outlet for students interested in learning at a professionally produced publication. We incorporate game stories, features, statistics and original photography into our newspaper to provide a unique visual blend that emphasizes the unique aspects and stories of Dartmouth athletics. Positions are open for students interested in writing, editing, layout, photography, business management and advertising sales. Alumni in recent years have went on to write for the Boston Globe, New York Times and Washington Post. Blitz: the sports weekly
- The Stonefence Review publishes creative works--poetry, prose, all forms of visual art--by members of the Dartmouth Community. It welcomes contributions from undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni/ae, faculty and staff. Stonefence Writing Editors discuss each submitted piece in a workshop setting; all pieces are evaluated anonymously, and we meet the authors if they request critique. Art Editors may work more closely with artists to choose pieces that best represent their work within the limits of magazine print. We are dedicated to developing and sharing art, in all its forms. Stonefence publishes at least twice a year and more frequently as funds and material allow. Submissions of poetry, stories, creative essays and letters, limericks, sketches, photography, charcoal, etc. are accepted year-round. - Uncommon Threads is a newspaper that gives voice to the diverse population of Dartmouth College, specifically dealing with the intersections between racial, ethnic, religious and sexual issues and gender identity. Blitz: uncommon threads
- Vox Populi Comix periodically publishes a black and white comic book anthology featuring stories and art by Dartmouth students, working alone or in collaboration. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for aspiring comic book creators to experience the production process and to expose comics as a medium to the rest of the campus as a whole. Vox Pop is clearly Dartmouth's zestiest new publication. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Vox Pop is for fans of good art, good literature, or bad underground comix. We are punk rock!
