UFC allocation -- $41,500 for SA next year. This is EXTREMELY exciting. Is a good sign about confidence in SA. Will be great for new programs as well as dealing with Tom Dent.
DDS issues – the Pavilion had its grand opening tonight. Josh, members of Student Life, and members of Student Affairs will be meeting with students about advising DDS on various food options for the new facility.
E. Wheelock furniture – Furniture damages were previously charged to the floor on which the damages occurred. Josh worked with UGA, students, and Dean Redman. Good example of how SA responds rapidly and makes a difference in dealing with Admin.

Winter goals which members submitted at the end of fall term. Pay special attention to your committee, but be sure to look over the ‘Other’ category. These are GREAT ideas which need to be discussed within each committee. Hopefully we can accomplish a lot of these in the near future.
Holly Sateia
SA History – During the late 60s SA voted itself out of existence because they decided that they were only using SA as padding for their resumes. Came back in the 70s, and Holly has been advising officially since 1989. Throughout the years, there have a few common ideas SA focused on. Communication: Working with administration, faculty, students, and trustees. Service: SA card, Course Guide, Organic Farm, Public Computers. Community: Dartmouth United Against Hate, Town Meetings. Advising: First-year advising system. Leadership: Leadership Summit in 1998, Campus Unifying Event, Leadership Seminars. Student/Faculty/Administration relations: Holding the Admin. Accountable and receiving recognition for SA accomplishments.
Her advice for us is to hang in there. Don’t do student assembly for the glory. Oftentimes, SA is caught between the students and the administration, but being a part of SA will be valuable later in life for everyone involved. It teaches us how to become active citizens and to get involved with our community. Also, try to focus on a few specific issues. Don’t try and take on everything. There are rewards and frustrations which come with SA, but it’s definitely worthwhile.
Her role as an advisor is to point us in the right direction – who to talk to and when. Also, she is someone to bounce ideas off of, and she serves as a liaison between SA and administration.
How Decisions Are Made and How to be Effective in Influencing Change: check out the three handouts she provided. The college is very decentralized, so it is important to learn where to go for which kinds of issues. Need to work on communication first and foremost. The Dartmouth term goes so fast, so communication is key. College Committees need to be more effective, and students need to get to know administrators. Do your homework, ALWAYS! Know about the past, and don’t make assumptions. Instead, ask questions and look at issues from more than one angle (avoid making problems personal). Ask for an idea of the time line the administrators have in mind. Finally, hold each other accountable and ask for help when you need it.
Question about how to improve communications was asked. Holly thinks talking person to person is most important and, in response to another question, said that college committees and departmental advisory boards are the best way to influence change. Most important…just get involved!
MIAC ELECTION
Chris Bateman ’05 and Alex Rich ’03 were nominated. Positive remarks were made about each of them.
RESULT: Chris Bateman was re-elected. CONGRATS!
