Area Concentrations and Specializations
The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program (AMES) offers various areas of study. In constructing a major in one of the three main areas of concentration, please click on the relevant link below and consult the worksheet and list of approved courses for that concentration. The major in AMES requires a minimum of ten courses. Normally all ten courses will be in the student's area of concentration. A student who wishes to combine courses from more than one area must provide a written rationale for approval by the advisor and the AMES Chair. Central Asia is a special area of strength of the AMES faculty, but at present Dartmouth does not offer a sufficient number of courses to form a track. Please consult Professors Crossley, Eickelman, Garthwaite or Levin to discuss the possible inclusion of Central Asia as a focus in your AMES major. In addition, students prepared to pursue serious work in Global Studies should consult with the Chair about working with various Dartmouth faculty members to satisfy special degree requirements in AMES.
