From Art to Artifact:  Making Sense of Roman Coins

Visual puns persisted not only on Roman coins, but also on scultpural relief. Shown here is the funerary relief of Titus Statilius Aper, “The Boar”. The relief depicts Aper with a boar (Latin, aper) slain at his feet, creating a clever visual pun on his cognomen.
