In celebration of the Feast of Saint Luke,
This talk will address the moral principle of ethically proportionate and disproportionate means of sustaining life and why Catholic teaching on this principle differs from the arguments for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. The issue of medically administered nutrition and hydration for the permanently unconscious patient will also be discussed. Dr. Peter J. Cataldo is Director of Respect Life and Coordinator for Catholic Relief Services for the Diocese of Manchester and was formerly the Director of Research at The National Catholic Bioethics Center. He is published in the fields of bioethics and philosophy, including two books he co-edited: Catholic Health Care Ethics and The Fetal Tissue Issue (both with Albert S. Moraczewski, O.P., Ph.D.).
