There are various ways to be involved in service to the community in the Hanover area and beyond: Service Days are organized each term: Students spend a day assisting various individuals and organizations in the Upper Valley. Special events are held in response to particular needs as they arise throughout the year, such as a fundraising event with proceeds going to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and a book drive to benefit a school in the Marshall Islands. Alternative Spring Break Trips: Aquinas House sponsors alternative spring break trips for anyone interested in spending their inter-term break serving others. During the Spring of 2007, students went to the Gulf Coast area, still reeling from the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, to assist with rebuilding and recovery efforts. In recent years students have gone to Harlem, Brooklyn, West Virginia, and Combermere, Ontario, to serve as aides in local schools, to volunteer at soup kitchens, to build a house, and to work alongside others who were dedicated to living out the Gospel in their daily lives. The Upper Valley Haven is a private, not-for-profit human services organization that offers emergency shelter for families struggling to meet their basic needs. Food drives, clothing drives, and fundraisers are held throughout the year. Care Net Pregnancy Center of the Upper Valley provides service to those who are facing parenthood without the benefit of financial resources or family support. Services include free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, a maternity and baby clothes boutique, and counseling services. Clothing drives and fundraisers are held throughout the year. Habitat for Humanity: AQ teams up with the Dartmouth Chapter of Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for residents of the Upper Valley. |
