At Dartmouth College, the goal for all
divers is to develop their individual skills in order to compete at the highest
level of competition -- dual meets, Eastern, or NCAA championships, U.S. Diving
Zones and Nationals. Since 1961, 35 Dartmouth divers have been Eastern
championship finalists and five have won Eastern titles. Throughout the years,
Dartmouth has been well represented at the NCAA Championship, and two divers
went on to earn All- America honors while becoming U.S. National finalists. The
most recent NCAA qualifier is Courtney duBois '99 who in March 1997 also became
the first Dartmouth woman to compete on the national level. Toby Hays '99 won
the men's three-meter competition at the 1998 Easterns.
The season begins in October and can extend as
far as April with the U.S. diving meets. After the fall term examinations have
ended in early December, the divers go to sunny, warm climate for 10-12 days of
training. Then everyone heads home for the Holidays and returns to Hanover in
late
December. January, February, and
March are filled with dual meets leading up to the Eastern Intercollegiate
Swimming League and NCAA Championship meets. The weekly routine includes
strength training in the morning, dry-land drills for flexibility and skill
development, trampoline and dry-board/port-a-pit sessions. Each diver is
scheduled for two individual trampoline and dry-board workouts every week.
