DCF Scholar Spotlight

Benjamin M. Koons '08

Ben is the Captain of the Ski Team and is completing his Bachelor of Engineering degree at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth.

"...I spent this past summer in Rwanda, designing and implementing an innovative biogas system for a rural health clinic. The system creates biogas for cooking from human waste, thus addressing the issues of sanitation and energy, two of the developing world's greatest problems. The project was sponsored by Dartmouth HELP worldwide (Humanitarian Engineering Leadership Projects), an organization, which I am now President of, that is committed to improving the quality of life for communities all over the world through the implementation of appropriate technologies that are socially conscious, environmentally aware, and fully sustainable."

Following graduation he says, "My plans are still quite open. I may continue on to graduate school, pursue my ski racing career, or start working. I am interested in sustainable design, green architecture, business, energy and water solutions, especially to improve the quality of life in third world countries."
