Study Group Leaders for 08S
Leonard Chang '11. Leonard, as a first-year student, is
currently undecided about his choice of major. This term he is teaching
Econ 10 (Giummo).
Leonard learned of the Tutor Clearinghouse (TC) from
his Writing 5 professor, Carl Thum--also the Director of the
Academic Skills Center (ASC). While he is involved in the
academically-oriented College Bowl, he shares that he is also an avid viewer of
tv show 'The Hills.'
Laura Little '08. Laura is a double major in
Economics and English who learned about TC from professor recommendations.
This term she is teaching Econ 36 (DeSantis). Laura was
a Presidential Scholar for the English department throughout her junior year.
She spent two off-terms working at Disneyland and Abercrombie & Fitch
for a "change of pace," and admits to cleaning and organizing as a way to cope
with stress! Soon after graduation she will be working at
Cambridge Associates in Alternative Non-Marketable Research.
Aaron Damato '08. Aaron is an Economics major who is
teaching Econ 26 (Zinman) this term. He is active in the
Dartmouth Business Group and the campus publication" The Beacon." During
the past three summers Aaron has "flipped" homes on Long Island (to "flip":
purchase, fix, and resell homes). If he is able to get to bed
early, he actually enjoys going to the gym before his 9am class.
Alicia Driscoll '11. Alicia, as a first-year student,
is currently undecided about her major choice. This term she is teaching
GOV 10 (Herron). Alicia is heavily involved in campus
organizations such as Programming Board and Active Minds, and is also on
the board of Directors of DartHeart, Inc. She is also currently employed at
the Admissions Office and undergoing training to become a Sexual Abuse
Peer Advisor (SAPA) this term. Alicia discovered TC because one
of her favorite study spots is 3rd floor Collis, specifically
the "comfy" chairs which are located right next to ASC. She
would like to share that she is "obsessed" with post-it notes, which can be
found all over her room because she is a compulsive listmaker.
Sarah Carden '10. Sarah is a double major in Biology and
Economics. She is teaching Bio 11 (Guerinot) this term.
Sarah spends a great deal of her time involved in Alpha Xi Delta
sorority, Medlife, and Microbiology research. Most recently she has assisted
Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology Deborah Hogan with her
research on Candida Albicans and Dr. Fred Kull (retired professor of
Chemistry) with research on Enzyme Kinetics. She learned about TC
through blitz and really looks forward to her new experience as a study
group leader.
Daniel Cohen '08. Daniel is an Economics major with a
minor in Mathematics. This term he is teaching Econ 21
(Snyder) and Psych 1 (Jernstedt, et al). He is
an Undergraduate Advisor (UGA) who also devotes time to Club Tennis
and the Club of Dartmouth Entrepreneurs. He has extensive internship
experience through employment at the Parthenon Group, the President's
Council of Economic Advisors, and the office of Congressman Tom Price.
Daniel learned about TC through blitzes and flyers.
Steve Pan '09. Steve is double major in Engineering
and Economics. He is teaching Econ 20 (Bhattacharya)
this term. He is very involved in his fraternity and currently serves as
the chapter's Treasurer. Steve discovered TC because he himself is a
former study group participant! He has, interestingly, eaten the same
thing for Breakfast every morning for the past two terms: a Billy Bob
from the Hop!
Norah Comstock '08. Norah has been an Econ
10 maven for the Tutor Clearinghouse, but this Winter, she is teaching
two WGST 30 (Chaudhury) study groups. She is an Econ and
Environmental Studies double major with a minor in English. She has been
a stalwart of the Tutor Clearinghouse, carrying much of the load for Econ 10
throughout her career here. In addition, she is involved with the Mock
Trial Society and Tabard. During her time at Dartmouth, Norah has had a
varied work experience, including being an ice core analyst at CRREL, a
Research Intern for the Dartmouth Arctic Studies program, a Project Intern for
the Farm to Dartmouth project through Vital Communities, a Publicity/Marketing
Assistant for the University of Chicago Press, an Environmental and Economic
Intern for the City of Lebanon (NH) Municipality and an Assistant in the
Language Resource Center. The Academic Skills Center contacted Norah to
be an Econ 1 tutor after being recommended by her professor. Norah
believes that tutoring and leading study groups for introductory and
intermediate classes has kept her on top of the information in her advanced
classes. "When you teach something, you solidify those concepts, and a
good understanding of the basic concepts is key to doing well."
Norah cannot walk by The Blend when it is open
without getting a Berry Fix smoothie.
Laura DeLorenzo '10. Laura is a double major in Chemistry
and Physics and learned about the Tutor Clearinghouse when she received an
e-mail about tutoring. This term, she is teaching Chem 5
(Kull). On Campus, she is involved in the Women in Sciences Program
and Cross-Country skiing. She also enjoys running. Her WISP internship was
at CRELL. She also did REU at Harvard in Applied Physics. Laura claims
that she enjoys teaching for the Tutor Clearinghouse because "tutoring
refreshes my knowledge from earlier classes."
Matthew Forman '11. Matthew is a first-year student at
Dartmouth and so he is undecided about his major right now. He joined the Tutor
Clearinghouse after he was recommended by Professor Weber when he took her Math
8 class during the Fall of 2007. This Winter, Matthew is teaching Math
8 (Weber/Mainkar). Matthew's main interest is Music! He sings
with the Chamber Singers and Handel Society and plays trombone with the Barbary
Coast Jazz Ensemble. An interesting time for Matthew was when he was once
"locked in a bathroom by a cow."
Christine Goldrick '11. Christine, as an
undecided Major in the Class of 2011, is a part of many organizations on
campus. She has joined DCGH, medlife, and SFA. In addition, she takes parts in
the Generation Project at Dartmouth College and Stanpoints. Off campus,
Christine worked as a Congressional Campaign Intern. She also has done work for
the Department of Public Health as an intern. This Winter of 2008, she is
teaching a study group for Govt 5 (Brooks).
Chad Gorbatkin '08. As a major in Biology, Chad went on the
Biology Foreign Study Program during his time at Dartmouth. Currently, he's
leading a Study Group for Chem 52 (Veale). On Campus, Chad is
involved in Club Wrestling, takes part in Triathlons, and has different
Work-Study jobs. He has also gone on the Spanish Language Study Abroad Program
in addition to taking part in the Tucker Fellowship in Piura, Peru. He got
involved in the Tutor Clearinghouse when he found out that there was free
tutoring for financial aid students. An interesting event in his life was when
he "once lived for 2 weeks on free burrito coupons at Boloco."
Meagan Herzog '10. Meagan is a Spanish and
Economics double major. She is hosting a study group in Econ
10 (Lewis) during this Winter 2008 Term. At Dartmouth, Meagan is
involved with student groups including the College Democrats and Dartmouth for
Barack Obama, where she serves as the Volunteer Director. In addition, she
serves as an Undergraduate Advisor for the Residential Education Program.
During the 2006-2007 School Year, she took part in the Women in Science
Project. Meagan thinks that being a study group leader is reward because she
likes hearing "that [she] helped a student succeed in a class."
Meagan's Professor recommended her as Study Group Leader in a class she
excelled in and she consequently became a part of the Tutor
Clearinghouse.
Bo Huang '08. As an Economics major and a Theater minor in
his senior year, the Tutor Clearinghouse is very lucky to have a study group
leader in Bo. This Winter, he is teaching Econ 26 for
Professor Simons. He began to work at the Tutor
Clearinghouse after he received a blitz from the Academic Skills Center about
the opportunity. On Campus, Bo is a participant in "Agape, Theater, and
Cycling." Bo has also had many internships throughout his four years at
Dartmouth. In the Fall of '06, he worked for the Deutsche Bank Global Markets
in New York. In Winter of '07, he worked for Bridgewater Associates in
Connecticut. Finally, in Summer 2007, he worked for Deutsche Bank again.
Alex Kaplan '08. Alex has been the resident expert in
Govy 10 for the Tutor Clearinghouse. He is otherwise
involved with the College Democrats and Reach Out and Read (a group that
reads with disadvantaged children in the Upper Valley). Alex has been a
Presidential Scholars Research Assistant in the Government Department,
assisting Professor Fowler on her project examining the intersection between
domestic political conflicts and foreign policy. Off campus, he has
interned in political consulting offices in Washington, DC and worked on the
campaigns of a Pennsylvania State Representative. Alex discovered the
Academic Skills Center during his freshman winter after receiving a
recruiting blitz from the Tutor Clearinghouse asking him to consider being a
tutor. He signed up to tutor statistics and had such a good time, he
moved up to being a study group leader. He has been doing it every term
he can for two+ years. Alex feels "first and foremost, the
opportunity to work with students here in any capacity is fun and rewarding.
They are appreciative of leaders' efforts and the chance to help fellow
students is a great way to give back to the Dartmouth community that gives us
so much. Also being a study group leader has helped me maintain
my grasp of statistics. This, in turn, has been helpful in
obtaining internships." Alex likes Frasier alot and will
often watch an episode before going to bed. He is also an avid
Philadelphia sports fan, following the Phillies and Eagles games.
Faith Kim '10. Faith , a Biochemistry major, is
leading a study group in Chem 5 during Winter term 2007
for Professor Mierke. She is involved with START
(Student Teachers for the ARTS), Dartmouth Coalition for Global Health (DCGH),
the Agape Christian Fellowship, plays club tennis and loves anything involving
music (even classical!). Faith was involved in research with a pediatric
palliative care team at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, has worked with a
pediatric oncologist, as well as volunteering in the Emergency department.
Faith never really looked into the Tutor Clearinghouse until people
started raving about the study groups during her freshman fall. When Chem
5 leaders were needed, she decided to "give it a shot", not only because she
knew she could help her peers, but also she could brush up on a subject that
she knew would be helpful later on. Faith believes "[Dartmouth]
students are already bright and extremely smart; this is just a chance to brush
up on, and even master, material by working with others. Most likely if
someone doesn't know the answer, there's always another person there who can
start the group off. Study groups are definitely a team effort -- there's
always more than one way to approach something and everyone has a different
take/perspective." Faith's "weakness" is Haribo gummy bears.
Shreoshi Majumdar '10. Shreoshi is leading a study
group in Chem 5 during winter term for Professor
Mierke. Although she has not yet declared her
major, she is contemplating Chemistry or Biology. Outside of her
academics, Shreoshi occupies her time with her involvement in the Dartmouth
Undergraduate Journal of Science, the East Wheelock Cluster Council and she is
a Women in Science Project (WISP) Peer Mentor. She has also been a
research intern in Earth Sciences through WISP during Winter and Spring, 2007.
She also completed a First Year Summer Research Project during the Summer
of 2007 and is currently a Barbara Crute Memorial Intern in the Earth Sciences.
Shreoshi learned about the Academic Skills Center and the Tutor
Clearinghouse during Orientation week in her first year as a Dartmouth
student. She loved the handouts on time management and
note-taking. During the winter of her freshman year, she had a
great tutor for Writing 5 (and treated him to lunch when she got a good
grade *hint hint*). Following that experience, she began tutoring
through the Tutor Clearinghouse. She has found that she has benefited
through her work at the Tutor Clearinghouse by revising old material,
revisiting favorite classes, reviving relationships with professors and
relating to new people through shared courses. Shreoshi
would like you to know that she will laugh at practically anything once she has
had a large enough dose of caffeine.
Matthew Miller '09. Matt has elected to major
in both Mathematics and Economics and is hosting Econ 20 study
groups during 08W. He is a member of the Men's Varsity Soccer team and a
brother in Alpha Delta Fraternity. He is also a Presidential Scholar in
Economics with Professor Massimiliano DeSantis. Matt first became aware
of the Tutor Clearinghouse when a friend who was interested in being helped
with Math 3 told him about a "free" tutoring service for athletes. Matt
feels that working through the Tutor Clearinghouse "allows you to help others
while furthering your own understanding of the material". He has a
"bizarre fascination" with writing on a chalkboard; he attributes much of his
interest in economics and math to this infatuation.
Michael Milone '10. Michael is an Economics and
Chemistry double major at Dartmouth. He is teaching the Math 3
(Mainkar) Study Group. On Campus, he is involved in the Dartmouth Ends
Hunger Grassroots Soccer Program. Off campus, he worked on the Summer
Scientific Work Program, where is rotated through various departments of
Franklin General Hospital in Valley Stream, New York. He found out about the
Tutor Clearinghouse and began to work for it when he received an E-mail
Notification of a Recommendation. The reasons he gives for wanting to teach are
to "refresh material, help others, and make friends." Last and
certainly not least, Michael loves cottage cheese.
Arthur Ng '11. As a Freshman at Dartmouth, Arthur is
planning to be an Economics major. He is teaching the Econ
1 study group for Professor Curtis this Winter 2008.
On Campus, Arthur enjoys taking part in "Water Polo."
Lauren Orr '08. Lauren has the unique opportunity
in Winter 2008 to teach study groups for two different classes. She's
leading one each for Psych 1 (Jernstedt/ Kleck/ Tse/
Whalen) and Psych 26 (Steven). Lauren found out
about the Tutor Clearinghouse when she saw a blitz from the Academic Skills
Center about its services. On Campus, she serves as the editor-in-chief of the
yearbook . She has been a part of the Alpha Phi Sorority and also worked as a
Lab research assistant. Lauren also claims to have an interest in photography.
Other than working as a Study Group Leader, Lauren worked in "lab
internships on campus and in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center."
Elizabeth Palmer '11. Elizabeth started working for the
Tutor Clearinghouse when she was recommended by Professor Weber in the fall of
her freshman year. As she is still only a first-year student, Elizabeth is
still an Undeclared major. This term, she is teaching Math 8
(Weber/Mainkar). On campus, she enjoys playing "club soccer"
and is a part of "DREAM."
Federico Sequeda '09. Professor Eric Edmonds introduced
Federico to the Academic Skills Center by recommending him to teach
Economics 24. Federico is very involved on campus as he is the
President of both PorLatinoamerica and Thursday Night Salsa. In addition, he is
part of the Dartmouth Society of Investment and Economics and is currently the
Sigma Nu Fraternity rush chair. He has also taught Spanish drill from Fall 2006
to Fall 2007. Federico says that he has "enjoyed both teaching and learning
and gained experience in doing so" from all his activities, which
also include being a Presidential Scholar Research Assistant.
Dan Shedd '11. Dan is an undeclared major at Dartmouth
right now looking into Engineering. Currently, he is teaching Math
8; Dan was recommended to teach this class and work for the Tutor
Clearinghouse by Professor Weber of the Mathematics Department. He works
at Dining Services and likes to play squash and climb with his friends. About
the future, Dan says that he "may be working as a tutor for low-income
families."
Michael Simoni '08. Michael is teaching Psych 26
(Steven) and has declared a major in Neuroscience. On
Campus, he is involved in the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students and
also serves as a Research Assistant in the Surgery Department of the
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical center. Michael has also been a Research Assistant
in the Psychology Department and a "Teaching Assistant in the Computer
Science Department." He writes that he started to work for the Tutor
Clearinghouse as he was recommended by the faculty because of his grades.
Pamela Tieu '08. Pam has been working with the Tutor
Clearinghouse for two+ years as a Biology tutor/study group leader and is
hosting a study group for Bio 13 (Dolph)
during winter term. She is a Biology major and Chinese minor. Her
extracurricular activities include being a mentor for WISP and Link-Up, as
editor of Main Street (Dartmouth's Asian American and Cross-Cultural
magazine), as a lab research assistant with C. elegans in the Biology
department, is a member of the Nathan Smith Society and most recently as a DOSC
(Dean's Office Student Consultant). Pam has travelled to Beijing, China
on the AMELL FSP, been an intern at Columbia University working as an assistant
researcher in a laboratory which focuses on the latency of varicella zoster
virus and participated in the Health Career Opportunity Program at the
Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. She first became aware of the
Tutor Clearinghouse as a result of seeing flyers around campus and was blitzed
by Holly Potter. She decided to sign up as a tutor for introductory
courses in the Biology and Chinese departments. Pam has noted, "After
tutoring students, I realized how incredibly rewarding it was to just help
someone, as clichéd as it may sound. Passing knowledge, as well as
advice, to someone who needs it makes you feel like you have contributed
something important to the Dartmouth community as a whole, and lessened
someone's confusion/frustration about academia. My experience at TC has
led me to take other leadership roles such as becoming a study group leader,
teaching assistant for labs and a DOSC."
Dan van Deusen '11. Although it's early in the game,
Dan has decided on a Government major. This term (08W) he is hosting a
study group for Govy 5 (Brooks) after having had a successful
study group experience in Govy 5 during Fall term. Dan sings with the
Dodecaphonics and the College Glee Club, as well as being a member of the
College Democrats and START.
Monica Yu '08. Monica is an Economics major and has
double-minored in Biogenetics and Chemistry. She is hosting a study
group in Econ 1 (Curtis) this term. She is a member
of the Fencing team, Women in Business and a sister of Sigma Delta Sorority.
On campus Monica held a WISP internship in biochemistry, researching the
mechanism behind juvenile hormone action in Drosophila, she has worked the
Intel Teach to the Future Program where she instructed teachers in China how to
incorporate technology (Microsoft Office applications) into their teaching,
held a commercial real estate internship with Marcus and Millichap, held a
hedge fund internship with GSC Group (focusing on the distressed debt market),
and was an intern at Goldman Sachs in the Operational Risk department.
She first became aware of the Tutor Clearinghouse through a
recommendation by one of her professors. "I find study group leading
to be a mutually beneficial experience. Through the process of helping
others, I am able to keep my understanding of the courses I teach fresh."
Monica likes to bake cookies every Sunday afternoon as a way to
de-stress from the week. She, along with her roommates, also likes to
dance around in their PJs at 2 a.m.
