Dartmouth College 504/ADA Committee

Vision:

For Dartmouth College to lead in fostering a community that is fully and seamlessly inclusive of people with disabilities in all aspects of its working and learning environment.

Mission:

In support of Dartmouth College’s Mission, Core Values, and Principle of Community, the 504/ADA Committee promotes and facilitates a campus community:

  1. in which people with disabilities have full, equal, and integrated access to, and opportunities within, all campus activities, services and programs, and
  2. that recognizes and appreciates the variety of perspectives that individuals with disabilities have about disability and disability identity, culture, and pride.

Purpose:

The 504/ADA Committee advises the President, Provost, Dean of the Faculty and the Vice-President of Institutional Diversity & Equity about disability related issues. In doing so, the Committee should consider the disability-related legal parameters to which Dartmouth College may be subject including, but not limited to, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Fair Housing Act. The consideration of legal parameters is to help assure compliance with them, rather than to limit recommendations to simply meet legal requirements.

Committee Charge:

  • Analyzing and identifying problems, proposing solutions, and making
recommendations regarding the development and implementation of policies and procedures in the area of services to students, employees and the general public with disabilities.
  • Supporting the growth and development of awareness of disability issues across the campus.
  • Encouraging the concept of shared responsibility regarding the full integration
and inclusivity of all persons with disabilities into the campus community.
  • Collaborating in an effort to ensure that the institution maintains compliance with applicable federal and state laws and mandates.
  • Analyzing campus policies, procedures, and practices to assure full, equal, and integrated access to, and opportunities within, all campus activities, services, and programs.
  • Recommending new, or changes to, existing policies, procedures, and practices

Committee Structure:

There will be three topical sub-committees: Policies and Procedures; Campus Facilities; and Public Events and Communication. Evelynn Ellis, Director of EO/AA, Ward Newmeyer, Director of Student Accessibility Services and Bill Hankel, EO/AA Coordinator will be the conveners of the sub-committees. The subcommittees will be focused on specific campus-wide needs and will report to the full committee. Once a term all members will be invited to a meeting of the full committee in order to be aware of the current issues facing the various subcommittees. Assignments to the subcommittees will be decided at the first full committee meeting.

Sub-Committees:

The Policies and Procedures subcommittee will make recommendations regarding general campus policies and procedures around access for students, staff, faculty and other Dartmouth constituents. This committee will focus on topics ranging from workplace accommodations to student accessibility issues.

The Public Events, Communication, and Technology sub-committee will look at access to public events at the College. There are a large number of public events, such as Convocation, Commencement, and performances, etc., which are held on campus. The College is required to provide access to such public events. This sub-committee will look at issues of access around sign language interpreters, accessible seating, and wheelchairs. It will also focus on access to the web, computing, equipment acquisition, access information, alternative formatting of information, and communication.

The Campus Facilities (Physical Environment) sub-committee will focus on access to buildings, grounds and pathways, accessible parking, and construction and building design in terms of access.
