Update regarding the death of Crispin Scott ’13

January 9, 2012

Dear Members of the Dartmouth Community,

You may have learned by now of the tragic death of Dartmouth student Crispin Scott, a member of the class of 2013, who died Saturday while participating in a study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain. We have reached out to Crispin's family to offer our condolences and support. The family's loss is unimaginable. We continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers, as we collectively mourn the loss of a son, brother, loved-one, friend, teammate, and cherished member of the Dartmouth community.

Many members of the community have inquired about a memorial service for Crispin. There have already been several informal gatherings to honor Crispin's memory. We will provide information regarding a formal memorial service as we learn more about the family's wishes.

John Tansey, executive director of our Off-Campus Programs office, arrives in Barcelona today to support the 81 members of the Dartmouth community who are studying there. At this point, we still do not have official word of the cause of death. We are closely following the investigation and will update the community, as appropriate, and as the facts are confirmed by Spanish officials.

Crispin was much beloved and his death has devastated our community. In addition to our support of Crispin's family, we are focusing on supporting students, faculty, and staff who are grieving Crispin's loss. The following support services are available:
