Death of Dr. C. Everett Koop '37

Dear members of the Dartmouth community,

I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. C. Everett Koop, a 1937 graduate of Dartmouth. Dr. Koop died peacefully at his home in Hanover earlier today, February 25, 2013. Please join us in giving thanks for "Chick" Koop's extraordinary dedication and service to all of us, and keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Koop will be remembered for his immense contributions to the health of patients and communities in the U.S. and around the world. He was a pioneer in the field of pediatric surgery. As one of our most remarkable Surgeons General, he elevated the public's understanding of the link between smoking and cancer, courageously spoke out using facts and compassion about HIV/AIDS, and championed the prevention of disease, improving millions of lives. He founded the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine in order to transform health care and the process of educating health professionals.

Dr. Koop leaves a legacy that will endure and help move our nation forward to achieve significant advances in the health of our citizens and all people across the globe.

Plans for Dr. Koop's memorial services are pending. We will inform you of further information as it becomes available.
