Message from Dean Johnson: Homecoming

Dear Members of the Dartmouth Community,

This weekend students, staff, faculty, and alumni will come together in celebration of Dartmouth Night and Homecoming. The bonfire on Friday night is the kick-off to a weekend that includes the 40th anniversary of the Black Association of Dartmouth Alumni, several athletic events, and a wide range of educational and social events from lectures to a cappella concerts. This weekend offers an opportunity to showcase the best of our community and to embody our values by creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, where the well-being of individual members is a priority.

In inaugurating Dartmouth Night in 1895, President William Jewett Tucker hoped that it would serve as a celebration of all that Dartmouth offers and a way to promote unity among students and alumni. Nowhere is this class unity and identity more clearly evident than in the parade. Every year, members from each class show up to hold their class banner high and demonstrate their pride. I encourage students to participate in the parade with members of so many classes before you.

To the Class of 2016: You are already valued members of the Dartmouth community. Participation in the first-year sweep and/or any other activity surrounding bonfire does not make you more or less a member. As you will discover, there are many activities during Homecoming Weekend. Make the experience your own.

Last weekend I watched with pride as our Gospel Choir performed in Spaulding Auditorium. Students from diverse backgrounds raised their voices in celebration of the spirit that is Dartmouth. The day before the concert, I marveled at the activity on the Green (and in town) as many members of our Greek organizations participated in the CHaD Hero Half Marathon, which raised nearly $600,000 for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth.

Homecoming Weekend is another chance to display Dartmouth at its best. Have fun, be safe, and take care of each other.

Warm Regards,

Charlotte Johnson
Dean of the College
