The Qualifications
Dartmouth College seeks in its new President a leader whose personal commitment to Dartmouth’s mission and intellectual vision and energy inspire all of the parts of the College community. The Search Committee understands that no single candidate will have all the ideal qualifications, but it seeks candidates with the following experience and abilities:
- A powerful affinity for and commitment to the mission and values of Dartmouth College;
- A personal commitment to teaching, an affinity for students and a pleasure in their company;
- A commitment to exceptional scholarly inquiry, a history of recruiting strong faculty, inspiring productivity and creating excitement about intellectual inquiry;
- Success as a strategic leader; an understanding of strategic choice, demonstrated by moving resources to fundamentally strengthen organizations;
- Experience as a strong communicator who can convey Dartmouth’s approach to excellence in higher education to external audiences nationally and internationally;
- The ability to build strong management teams and execute large and ambitious plans with fiscal responsibility;
- A fair, collaborative and transparent leadership style that will succeed in an environment of shared governance;
- Experience with and a knowledge of academic medical centers, an appreciation for their complexity and the opportunities they offer to higher education and to society;
- A commitment to professional and graduate education and relevant experience in strengthening graduate level institutions;
- An ability to bring campus constituencies to actionable consensus; the ability to energize and inspire students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, trustees and external stakeholders; the capacity to articulate the singular Dartmouth solution to all of its essential audiences;
- A commitment to diversity, including individual action and institutional leadership to advance diversity; and
- The capacity to represent Dartmouth compellingly to donors and to lead a development campaign; the ability to energize alumni to support the entire institution.
