Proposed Sexual Assault Disciplinary Policy: Request for Comments

March 14, 2014

To all members of the Dartmouth community:

Together with Interim Provost Wybourne and the Deans of the Faculties, we request comments and suggestions by members of the Dartmouth community on a proposal to comprehensively revise Dartmouth's student disciplinary policy for charges of sexual assault, which you can see here. The new policy we are proposing reflects the many discussions we have had throughout the community concerning this important subject, and in particular it builds on the work of the Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault and the Committee on Student Safety and Accountability.

You will find, in question-and-answer format, a summary of the key features of the proposal here. We encourage you to read it in its entirety and consider how we may improve it further. Please submit your comments and suggestions no later than Monday, April 14, 2014 by email to Alternatively, you can share your evaluation and comments online publicly at Improve Dartmouth.

In the coming weeks, we will be contacting involved faculty committees and student leadership groups to solicit their further input. Sessions of Moving Dartmouth Forward will also provide an opportunity to discuss the proposal in the context of a dialogue about the larger issues.

We believe a new system along the lines proposed would encourage reporting, expedite the disciplinary process, enhance consistency in sanctioning, and represent a stronger deterrent to sexual assault. We encourage your participation in the process of shaping this policy.
