On August 6th, NSS hosted Dr. Kurt Rhynhart, director of the Trauma Program at DHMC, Dr. Eric Martin, a general surgeon and member of the trauma team, and Michael Lauria, a Dartmouth grad (’05) and student at the Geisel School of Medicine. The doctors provided insight into the trauma rotation and rigorous schedule they face, and described some of the interesting cases they have faced in the past few months.

Dr. Rhynhart spoke about the methodical, team oriented approach they take to each case, no matter how extreme, and Dr. Martin recounted the challenges he faced in selecting trauma over other specialities like emergency medicine. Mike Lauria, a member of DHART, echoed this sentiment as he is deciding about specialization as a 4th year medical student.

Finally, all three speakers shared similar experiences as members of the military at the beginning of their careers and spoke about how it influenced their decision making skills. The dinner was well attended by NSS members and Dartmouth EMS members alike, and we enjoyed a dinner from Tuk Tuk.
