The Kresge Foundation offered Dartmouth a challenge: Raise $11 million by March 31, 2005, to build Kemeny Hall, and the foundation will give $1 million to complete the project. More than 1,990 alumni and friends gave generously to meet that goal.

"One thing I know for certain," John Kemeny said, "I'm one hell of a good teacher." In true Dartmouth style he taught introductory calculus even as president.
