How the Endowment is Invested

  • Dartmouth’s Investment Office, with oversight from the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees, manages the day-to-day investment of the endowment
  • Our long-term investment strategy aims to generate high risk-adjusted returns to meet the endowment return, liquidity, and risk objectives
  • The portfolio is diversified across asset classes: Global Equity, Hedge Funds, Private Equity, Venture Capital, Real Assets, Fixed Income, and Cash
  • Each asset class offers its own contribution to return, risk and liquidity objectives for the portfolio. Additional information on each asset class is described in the annual endowment report, found here
  • The Investment Office focuses on underwriting and making investments in professionally managed funds. These funds are managed by external firms, who in turn invest in stocks, bonds and other securities on their investors’ (including Dartmouth) behalf
    • As a result, Dartmouth typically does not directly own investments in individual companies
