Academics & Research

Academics and research form the core of liberal arts education at Dartmouth. At the undergraduate level, Dartmouth students are expected to engage in the deep analysis of a single discipline (major), gain a broad introduction to several fields (distribution requirements) and take part in interdisciplinary work that integrates all their courses. Beyond the classroom, Dartmouth offers students opportunities for internships and study abroad, as well as chances to work directly with faculty in new or ongoing research projects.

Dartmouth is also renowned for its graduate schools—Arts and Sciences, Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering, and Tuck School of Business—the programs they offer, and the research their faculties and students conduct.

Research activity in all areas of the College continues to grow. From 1999 to 2005, the sponsored project awards awarded annually to Dartmouth faculty has risen from $80 to $169 million with the majority (70 percent) going to Dartmouth Medical School. Much of the scholarship at Dartmouth results from professors working in collaboration across disciplinary lines and with students and in a growing number of centers and institutes dedicated to particular areas of study and research.

Emphasizing the "student" in student athlete

They excel on the fields, courts, and rinks, but Dartmouth's student athletes excel in the classroom as well. For the second straight year, 24 of Dartmouth College's varsity athletic teams will receive public recognition from the NCAA for having Academic Progress Rate scores among the Top 10% nationally in their respective sport.
