    The apprentices - Dartmouth undergrads who are considering careers in science have a chance to "apprentice" themselves to mentors at Dartmouth Medical School and actually sample the culture of life in a lab. Dartmouth Medicine magazine takes a look at several such pairings--through the eyes of two undergraduates who took on apprenticeships of a different sort.

    Under the big top - The Obie Award-winning Big Apple Circus returns to Hanover for its annual summer run. With a live band, world-class clowning, split-second juggling, trapeze acts and astounding slack-wire acrobats, the Big Apple brings the artistry, intimacy and creativity of classical circus to kids and grownups alike. The creation of 1963 Dartmouth graduate Paul Binder and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Big Apple Circus runs through July 24.

Thanks to Science Camp, an outreach project that connects Dartmouth students, the Montshire Museum of Science, and the Rivendell Interstate School District, classrooms in two Vermont communities are now full of children who know some young Dartmouth scientists first-hand.

    Exploring race and class - Author Caryl Phillips, who is visiting Dartmouth this summer as Montgomery Fellow, will give a public reading, "Growing Pains" this afternoon at 4 in Filene Auditorium of Moore Hall. Phillips is the author of nine novels, several books of non-fiction, anthologies, a travel narrative, and other pieces for radio, television, theater and film.

    The other side of the stethoscope - Physicians, for all their knowledge about health, sometimes fall prey to serious illness and injury. Dartmouth Medical School's award-winning magazine, Dartmouth Medicine, has received another honor recently for this 2007 look at doctors who find themselves on the receiving end of the stethoscope.

    National honors - Dartmouth students are well represented in national scholarships this year, with three current students and five alumni winning Fulbright Scholarships, two current students chosen as alternates for Fulbright scholarships, and a Beinecke Scholarship and Udall Scholarship awarded to current students and recent graduates.

    Deep thoughts - Though he says his first lecture in 1959 was not his best (paper airplanes flew from the balcony of 105 Dartmouth Hall) Bernard Gert has since become one of Dartmouth's most respected philosophy professors. "I benefited so much from my colleagues, and from how good the Dartmouth students are," says Gert, now wrapping up a half-century of teaching.
