Optional Tuition Insurance

About the Plan

Accidents and illnesses happen. Dartmouth College has a tuition refund policy which is governed by the date of the withdrawal (see below for a summary).  While this policy provides some relief when a student must withdraw after the start of the term, it may leave a student or family in a vulnerable position, having paid for a term of tuition and then receiving no academic credit.

For the past thirteen years, Dartmouth College has had an agreement with A.W.G. Dewar, Inc. (Dewar) to offer the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP). This plan is a form of insurance which supplements the Dartmouth College refund policy.

Should you decide to participate in the Dewar TRP plan, you must complete the online application form and make full payment of the premium to Dewar before the student's first day of classes for the academic year (or by the first day of classes of each term for upper-class students). Applications cannot be accepted after these dates.

This private insurance program supplements the refund policy of Dartmouth College by ensuring the refund of 80% of tuition, room, board and required fees paid if a student withdraws, due to a qualifying illness or accident, after the beginning of an academic term. The refund to the student will only be of funds paid by or on behalf of the student. The amount refunded to the student will include loan disbursements but will not include scholarships and grants. In some cases, the insurer may reimburse third parties, including the College, for scholarships and grants within the limits of the coverage available.

The information below indicates how this program supplements the College's refund policy for a typical term if a student withdraws due to illness or accident.

  • The TPR Refunds 0%
  • Total Refund 100%

  • The TPR Refunds 0%
  • Total Refund 90%

    Total Refund 80%

Participation in the Tuition Refund Plan offered by Dewar is entirely optional. The College's refund policy is applicable regardless of your choice to enroll in the TRP. Dartmouth College does not endorse this or any other private tuition refund program, but we urge you to read about coverage, exclusions, and cost as you consider the suitability of the TRP for you or your student.

If you have any questions about the plan, please contact Dewar directly at (617) 774-1555.
