Windows Network Troubleshooting

< Previous

If you are having a problem connecting to the Dartmouth network, the first thing you should do is to make sure your computer is configured properly. If you are connecting via Ethernet, see Setting Up Windows XP/Vista for the Dartmouth Network for step-by-step instructions.

Once your computer is configured properly, is your computer plugged into the blue Ethernet port? The Ethernet port is the network wall jack that has a blue tab above it. Try plugging your computer into a different Ethernet port to see if you can connect to the network. If connecting to a different port resolves your computer problem, please complete the Wired Network Service Request to report the port number that needs to be repaired. You will need to report the port number, which should be listed above the port, your room or office number, and your building.

Are you using an Ethernet cable? An Ethernet cable looks very similar to a regular phone cable, but is slightly larger and the cable is thicker. Ethernet cables are often gray with a green cap that fits over the ends of the cable or black like the ones attached to many of the Cisco phones on campus. Try using your Ethernet cable on another computer that you know connects properly to the network. Make sure this other computer can still connect to the network when using your Ethernet cable. If it can't, then you need a new Ethernet cable.

Did the problem just start? If so, have you installed any new software or hardware since the last time you were able to connect to the network? Try removing the new software or hardware you installed, and restarting your computer.

Are other computers in the building having the same problem? If so, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 or your department's computing support office to report the problem.
