Public Printers

< Previous | Next >

Public printers are accessible from any properly connected personal computer to the Dartmouth network. Public printers are located in many locations across campus. For information on the locations, see Where Are the GreenPrint Release Stations (Printers)?.

If you have any questions about printing to public printers, call the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's computing support office.

Before attempting to print a document, always review the printing instructions that came with both your software and your computer equipment. Review the contents carefully for proper formatting and use of fonts. The Font menu (present in most programs) tells you what fonts are installed on your computer.

If you want to use a particular font, it must be properly installed. If you are using Mac OS 9.x, you can install and remove fonts by dragging them into the Fonts folder in your System Folder. If you are using Mac OS X, you should refer to Mac Help under the Help menu for instructions on how to install fonts. If you are using Windows 98/2000/XP, copy the font file to your system folder (e.g., c:\Windows\Fonts), then install the font by selecting Start, Settings, then Control Panel, then clicking on the Fonts folder, then File\Install New Font. Also consult the manuals that came with your computer and system software, or go online to learn more about using and installing fonts.

Printing Tips

Some tips to remember as you prepare to print your document:

  • Use tabs - not spaces - to indent paragraphs. Columns may be set using tabs or the "table" or "column" tool of the word processor you are using.
  • If you want to hyphenate words, wait until you have typed the final version of your document. Then hyphenate the line endings of the text.
  • Using too many fonts and too many styles within one document creates a very cluttered, unattractive piece. The key is to use the text-formatting features of the programs to present legible documents - ones that are read as much for their message as they are for their presentation. Simple formatting and text treatment are always best.
  • Make sure the printer you are planning to use is the selected printer before your final document formats.
  • Check page breaks and the rest of the formatting after selecting the correct type of printer. If you are working on a Word document, you can do this by selecting Print Preview from the File menu.
