A file server is a large network storage device that functions much like a
local hard drive on your computer. The icon for the file server appears on your
computer's desktop on a Macintosh, or in the My Computer folder on a Windows
computer.
Dartmouth provides several file servers for use by members of the Dartmouth
community:
- www.dartmouth.edu is the name of Dartmouth's primary Web
server. Anyone who is currently a member of the Dartmouth community can apply for an account on
www.dartmouth.edu and upload their own Web pages.
- Cobweb is the name of Dartmouth's experimental Web server.
Anyone who is currently a member of the Dartmouth community can obtain an
account on Cobweb for testing of CGIs. An account on www.dartmouth.edu is a
prerequisite for an account on Cobweb. For more information, see Web Hosting at
Dartmouth.
- Dropbox.dartmouth.edu and
ftplocal.dartmouth.edu are two files servers that can be used
for transferring large amounts of data from one computer to another. For more
information, see
Using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Program.
