Using Your Computer as a Stand-alone Computer

< Previous | Next >

A personal computer can be used as a free-standing computer, or as a terminal or workstation connected to the extensive computer network at Dartmouth.

Personal computers are fully capable of performing many tasks independent of the computer network at Dartmouth. All machines come with some basic software, including the operating system software required to run the computer, and additional tools and utilities. For descriptions and additional tips about using the supplied system software and utilities, read the manuals or various electronic documents that came with your computer and online help files that came with the software.

Many software developers and publishers have developed additional programs for use on personal computers. At Dartmouth, you can purchase many of these programs at competitive prices from Computer Sales and Service in 171 Carson Hall. Demonstration copies of many programs are also available in Computer Sales and Service, or for faculty, in the Faculty Academic Computing Center in Berry.

Each fall, Computing Services supplies members of the entering class of students with additional software that will be needed during their undergraduate careers at Dartmouth. Many of these applications take advantage of the network services provided at Dartmouth; see Using Your Computer on the Dartmouth Network.

Note: For students who arrived in September 2006 and purchased their computer through Dartmouth, the hard drive was preformatted with most of the software (stand-alone and network software) they will need at Dartmouth.
