Personal computers are fully capable of performing many tasks independent of the computer network at Dartmouth. All machines come with some basic software, including the operating system software required to run the computer, and additional tools and utilities. For descriptions and additional tips about using the supplied system software and utilities, read the manuals or various electronic documents that came with your computer and online help files that came with the software.
Additional software programs to use on a personal computer include:
- Commercial software - such as Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro or EndNote, that are available for purchase, at prices that reflect academic discounts, from Computer Sales and Service in 171 Carson Hall.
- Courseware and Instructional - such as CodeWarrior, JMP, or Final Draft, that are made available exclusively for use in classroom coursework.
- Public Domain - such as Firefox, Stuffit Expander, or Acrobat Reader, that are available on the Software Downloads Web page, and from various public or commercial network services. These programs are distributed free of charge.
Each fall, Computing Services supplies members of the entering class of students, who purchased their computer through Dartmouth, with additional software that will be needed during their undergraduate careers at Dartmouth.
