Pricing of all packages includes the following software and accessories: Operating System software; Microsoft Office 2008; Symantec AntiVirus; BlitzMail (Dartmouth’s electronic mail program); Sygate Security Agent (a personal firewall); an FTP client; Web browsers; the Dartmouth Restore CD; initial imaging costs; an Ethernet cable; a surge protector; Dartmouth's software security certificate; and a PKI token. If you plan on bringing your own computer to Dartmouth, you will be required to purchase most of these items once you arrive on campus.
The following computer systems fulfill the computer ownership requirement for incoming students entering in September 2008. All Apple and Dell laptops include an integrated wireless card. Apple laptops include a three-year AppleCare warranty, plus a free copy of the Leopard operating system; Dell laptops include a four-year CompleteCare warranty. Only the “basic” laptop systems or up to the cost of the basic laptop systems qualify for financial aid (you will received a letter in mid-June from the Financial Aid Office which explains this in detail). If you choose to purchase a high-end laptop system, financial aid will only cover the purchase price of one of the basic laptop packages: The estimated cost for the Apple MacBook is $1,507, and the estimated cost for the Dell XPS M1330 is $1,630.
