At Dartmouth, your personal computer is much more than a stand-alone personal computer.
When you connect to Dartmouth's campus-wide computer network, you can use your personal computer to access
- the central host computers
- electronic mail services
- file servers
- public printers
- information resources (such as those provided by the Dartmouth College Library) and
- other network facilities
Every personal computer connected to the Dartmouth network has access to the Internet without making any additional changes.
Your personal computer is also capable of performing many tasks independent of the computer network at Dartmouth. All machines come with some basic software, including the operating system software required to run the computer, and additional tools and utilities. For descriptions and additional tips about using the supplied system software and utilities, read the manuals or various electronic documents that came with your computer and online help files that came with the software.
Additional software programs
For academic coursework, connectivity, and general productivity software provided free to Dartmouth community members, see
For other commercial software to purchase (many at academically discounted prices), see
If you have questions regarding your computer or software, consult the manuals that came with the computer and programs. These manuals may be printed copies, or they may be on your computer's hard drive or a CD. If you have additional questions, contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
There are other sources of information available in the Knowledge Library.
