For Students

When you unpack your new computer equipment, remember to record the serial numbers and to send in the registration cards. Keep a record of your serial numbers in a safe place.

Security and Insurance

  • Mark your computer and accessories with the engraving equipment available from the Dartmouth Department of Safety and Security (646-4000). You will be asked to leave your Dartmouth ID card when you borrow the engraving equipment; the ID card will be returned to you when you return the equipment.
  • Keep your room or office locked whenever you are out.
  • Do not leave your computer and accessories unattended in public places.
  • Insure your own computer against theft, fire, and other risks through a homeowner's policy or some other commercially available policy. Although a homeowner's policy does provide some coverage for personal belongings that may include personal computers, it is usually limited in value and does not cover some of the likely sources of damage you may encounter, such as power surges or food or drink spilled onto the keyboard. For more information, contact your insurance carrier.
  • If your computer or equipment is stolen while you are at Dartmouth, in addition to notifying the Department of Safety and Security and your insurance carrier, you should also notify Computer Sales and Service in 171 Carson Hall (646-3249). They maintain a database of equipment reported stolen.

Computer Orientation

If you are a student new to Dartmouth or new to a personal computer, we recommend you attend the computer orientation sessions provided at the start of fall term each year. In addition, students, faculty, and staff members may attend any of the computer "workshops" offered by Dartmouth's Human Resources Organizational Learning and Professional Development program each term. Many of the courses cover the use of personal computers for specific programs or Dartmouth network services. For information about these computer workshops, see Professional Development.
