Electronic Mail

< Previous | Next >

Personal computers and all central computers at Dartmouth have electronic mail (e-mail) programs that let you compose and send messages and read messages sent to you. When you send an electronic mail message, it is usually delivered within minutes to the electronic mailbox file belonging to the recipient. BlitzMail is the supported e-mail program at Dartmouth. If you choose to use a different e-mail application, such as ThunderBird, Eudora, Outlook Express, etc., you can get directions for configuring it; see E-mail. It is recommended that you use IMAP instead of the POP3 protocol.

It is quite easy to exchange mail with people at Dartmouth. The Dartmouth Name Directory (DND) contains the names and electronic mail addresses of all students, faculty, and staff at Dartmouth. If you want to send electronic mail to someone at Dartmouth, generally all you need to know is their name; the DND supplies the complete electronic mail address automatically.

You can also exchange electronic mail messages with people throughout the United States and around the world. Our mail system connects to national and international networks that relay electronic mail messages to thousands of universities, corporations, and institutions. To find out the electronic mail address of someone off campus, you can often use one of the electronic "phone books" available on the World Wide Web. To learn more about connecting to and using these services, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or contact your department's computing support office.

As with all mail systems, electronic mail service at Dartmouth has a Postmaster. Postmaster is a group of people who can help you if you have problems with electronic mail or if messages are not delivered as you expected. Send electronic mail describing your e-mail problem to Postmaster and a team member will get back to you.

The privacy of electronic mail is somewhere between that of a letter and a postcard. Electronic mail is not entirely confidential. On occasion, the Postmaster may have to gain access to a message to determine if something is wrong with the address, or the message may be delivered inadvertently to the wrong address. Also, it is possible for electronic mail accounts to be misused if the passwords are revealed. Therefore, please guard your password! Do not give it to anyone!

Passwords

Your DND password is used to access a wide array of services, including e-mail, research materials, and administrative services. Therefore, you must protect your password by using some basic rules when composing your password.

Your password must conform to the following criteria:

  • It should be eight characters long using only numbers and upper- and lower-case letters.
  • There can be no more than four characters in sequence (e.g., "12345" or "abcde" are not allowed).
  • It must contain at least five different characters (e.g., "2a3a2a3a" only contains three different characters so it is not allowed).
  • It cannot be a word found in the dictionary (e.g., "password").
  • It cannot be a reversal of a word found in the dictionary (e.g., "drowssap").
  • It cannot be a word found in the dictionary plus one additional character either before or after the word (e.g., "xalgebra" or "algebrax").
  • It cannot be a word found in the dictionary with numbers substituted for look-alike letters (e.g., "passw0rd" or "pa55word").
  • It cannot be a word found in the dictionary minus any punctuation, symbols, or numbers (e.g., "oclock" or "soninlaw").

BlitzMail

BlitzMail is the electronic mail program developed at Dartmouth. BlitzMail software is available on the Software Downloads Web page and from the Student Computing Help Desk in 172 Carson Hall. BlitzMail can be distributed freely to anyone at Dartmouth.

For more information, see Getting Started with BlitzMail.

Note: If you are a new student entering in September 2007 and you purchase a personal computer through Dartmouth, your computer's hard drive will have the necessary BlitzMail software already installed.
