The Specific Steps

  1. Create your pages using the software of your choice. Macintosh users can use BBEdit, which is available on the BBEdit software downloads Web page.

Organize your pages and graphics you intend to use on your Web site in a folder on your hard drive. Make sure your home page is named index.html; all other file names must be lower-case and end in .html.
  2. Connect to your account using FTP. Connect to the server www.dartmouth.edu and log in using your name and password.

Macintosh users can use Fetch 4.0 or newer. It is available on the Fetch software downloads Web page.

  3. Double-Click the public_html folder. Files placed in this folder will become part of your Web site. Files placed outside this folder will not be available to a Web browser.
  4. Using Fetch, transfer the files by dragging them from the desktop to the Fetch window. Fetch will put them on the server for you.

You can also click the Put button or select Put Folders and Files from the Remote menu.
  5. You're Done! Now that you have copied your pages to the server, you can view them using your favorite Web Browser. The URL is http://www.dartmouth.edu/~name/. Replace name with the name of your account.
