Please note: If you do not want to use the new Image Editor in OmniUpdate, you can continue to use an external method to crop and resize your image (picnik.com or Photoshop) and upload them to OmniUpdate as you always have.
Image Editor
The new Image Editor in OmniUpdate allows you to resize, crop, and rotate images on your Web site directly from OmniUpdate. In addition, a new function allows you to upload and edit an image in one operation. This helps you resize your images before they are uploaded to the Web server.
Access to the new Image Editor is Level dependent: If you can upload files (Level 6 or above), you can use the Image Editor to upload images and edit existing images, but you cannot overwrite an existing image with the same filename. If you can delete files (Level 8 and above), you can edit and overwrite existing files. Please note: All Dartmouth OmniUpdate users are a Level 7, unless additional privileges have been granted by Web Services. If you do not know what Level user you are, click on the Dashboard tab, then click on Settings/Preferences. Your Level is provided under User Restrictions.
Image File Types
Please note: Simply changing the extension of an image file as you save it will convert it to a Web-optimized version of the chosen file type.
- Jpg, jpeg, and png images can be edited and uploaded using the new Image Editor. (If you prefer, you can continue to use the Upload button, but you will have to edit the image using an external method before uploading it).
- GIF images can be uploaded and edited via the new Image Editor, they just can not be saved as GIF files. They can be saved as PNG, or JPG files. If you need the file to remain as a GIF image, then use the Upload button from the content view and the GIF image will be uploaded (unedited) to the production server.
Access to the Image Editor
The Image Editor is available in two locations:
- While viewing a list of image files on the Production server.
- While inserting an image in the WYSIWYG editor.
Edit an Existing Image
- Click on the Content tab.
- Click on the images folder at the top level of your Web site.
- Click on the Production tab (to the far right of the window). [As images are always stored on the Production server, you will only see image files here.]
- Single-click on an image; a new window will appear. Please be patient as this will take a few seconds. Clicking more than once on an image will open a new window for each click you make.
- Resize, crop, and/or rotate the image. If you want to zoom in to see more or less of the image as you edit it, click on the scale buttons: + or -; it will not affect the size of the image file.
- Resize or Crop
- To resize an image, click on the Resize button. To resize the image proportionally, make sure the Scale proportionally check box is checked. By default, changing the width or height automatically changes the corresponding value. To adjust the width and height independently, uncheck the Scale proportionally check box. Leave the Resample image check box checked; if you don't, you will get a larger image that is not optimized for the Web.
- To crop an image, use your mouse to select a portion of the image, then modify the crop as necessary. Click the Crop button.
- Rotate: The Rotate button rotates the entire image counter-clockwise in 90-degree increments.
- To save the image on your local hard drive, click the Save As button; to save the image on your Web site, click the Upload As button (remember, this is Level dependent, so if you are a Level 8 or above, you can overwrite an image; otherwise, you will need to enter a new filename). Click OK. Your new image should now appear in the list of images.
Edit, Then Upload an Image
If you want to edit, then upload an image before saving it on the Production server, click on the Content tab, then the images folder (at the top level of your Web site), then click on the Production tab (to the far right of the window). Click on the Image/Upload link, select the image on your local hard drive, then click Open. You can now use the instructions provided above under "Edit an Existing Image" to resize, crop, and/or rotate the image, then save it to your local hard drive or upload it to your Web site.

To edit an image while in the WYSIWYG editor:

In the window that appears, click the Browse button, click on an image, then click the Edit Image button to edit the file displayed in the Preview window. A new window will appear. Please be patient as this will take a few seconds. Clicking more than once on an image will open a new window for each click you make.
