Guidelines for RSS Items

  • Do not create an RSS item for an index page, unless the content is unique in some way. Instead, make an RSS item for the inside page that changed, if it adheres to the standards for creating an RSS feed.
  • Do not create an RSS item for restricted or protected Web pages (those that have an .htaccess file in a directory).

Title Field

  • Make the item title meaningful so the page context is clear to someone reading the title for the first time. The item and page titles do not necessarily have to match.

Description Field

  • Use twenty-to-thirty words that capture the theme of the document and the new/updated information. Three-word descriptions are not very helpful; long ones do not scan well.
  • Date your entry using these conventions for updated, posted, and reviewed pages: Status, date, action taken (what has changed, new content, etc.).
    • Updated on 9/28/05; <action taken> (such as "version update").
    • Posted on 9/28/05; <action taken> (such as "new page" or "new section").
    • Reviewed on 9/28/05; <action taken> (such as "no changes made").
