People who use third-party IMAP e-mail applications, such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail, may still use SpamAssassin to help filter unwanted spam by following the directions below.
Create a folder within your e-mail program into which all messages flagged as spam will be automatically filtered. This folder may be titled anything you wish, but common choices are "Spam" or "Junk." Log out of your e-mail account. Next, click here to tell SpamAssassin what the name of the folder is and what sensitivity level to use when filtering. We recommend you start at level 5. Once you save your changes, e-mail that is flagged as spam will automatically be delivered to the folder you specified, rather than to your In Box.
If you are still getting too much spam delivered to your In Box, try setting the filter to a lower number, then monitoring what goes into the folder. If you are getting valid e-mail messages automatically delivered to your spam folder, try setting the filter a little higher, then monitoring what goes into the folder. You may need to make a few adjustments to the filter sensitivity level for the types of spam you receive.
If you have questions, please contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
