Mac OS Printing Tips

If you are having problems printing to a printer that is attached directly to your computer, check the cable that connects the printer to your computer. Try using a different cable.  Make sure the connections are tight on both ends. Make sure the printer is ready and warmed up; that it has toner or ink and paper in it; and that it is on line. Note that Epson inkjet printers will only work if all cartridges have ink in them; if one is empty, the printer won't print. If there is an error light (e.g., paper jam), be sure that issue is fixed. Try turning the printer off for at least one minute, then turning it back on. Retry your print job. Check to see if the printer has been stopped; to do so, open the Print Center and double-click on the printer in question. Make sure the printer status does not read Jobs Stopped; if it does, select the Start Jobs icon. If you do not see the printer in question in the Print Center, it is possible the printer has been deleted and so will need to be reinstalled. See How Do I Set Up My Computer So I Can Print To a Local Printer? for instructions.

If you are having problems printing to a printer that is on the network and is located near your office, make sure the printer is ready and warmed up; that it has toner and paper in it; and that it is on line. If there is an error light (e.g., paper jam), make sure to fix it. Check to make sure you have the correct printer selected. You may have sent your print job to another printer. You may be having a problem with the network connection on your computer. Can you print to another printer, or do other things on the network, like BlitzMail, or browse the Web? If not, see Macintosh Networking Troubleshooting for help. Try turning the printer off for at least one minute, then turning it back on. Retry your print job. Can others print to that printer? If not, it may be the printer that is having a problem, not your computer. Please be considerate of other users who may be using that printer. Check to see if the printer has been stopped; to do so, open the Print Center and double-click on the printer in question. Make sure the printer status does not read Jobs Stopped; if it does, select the Start Jobs icon. If you do not see the printer in question in the Print Center, it is possible the printer has been deleted, and therefore, will need to be reinstalled. For instructions, see How Do I Set Up My Printer To Be Available On The Network?. If you continue to have problems, try deleting the printer and reinstalling it. For more information, see How Do I Set Up My Printer to Be Available on the Local Network.

If it is a public printer you are having problems with, make sure you are using GreenPrint to send your documents to the public printers. For information about using the GreenPrint system and the locations of the public printers on campus, go to GreenPrint.

If you want to order a new printer, move a printer from one building to another, or request a static IP address for a printer, you should contact your department's computing support office or fill out the appropriate Printer Request Form.

If you continue to have problems, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 or your department's computing support office.
