Most departments at Dartmouth print to networked printers using the
combination of a unique name called a "DNS name" and a unique network
identifier called a "fixed IP address." By defining these for the printer, you
can configure your computer to print directly to a networked printer.
If your printer does not have a fixed IP address or if you are unsure that
it does, contact your department's
computing support office. Your support office can also request a
fixed IP address for your printer; see
Request Printer Name/IP Address Form. Once an IP address has been assigned,
the printer must be configured to use its new IP address. To get your
printer properly configured, contact your department's
computing support office.
Once the printer is configured, you can add a networked printer to your
computer's Printer List. This process assumes your printer's drivers are
already part of the operating system, you have installed them from the
manufacturer's CD, or you have downloaded them from the Web.
To print directly to a printer using Mac OS X version 10.5.x, follow the
steps below:
- Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner, select
System Preferences, and click Print &
Fax.
- Click the "+" button on the left side to add a
printer.
- Make sure the IP tab is selected along the top.
- Beside the Protocol line, choose Line Printer Daemon
(LPD).
- In the Address field, enter the printer's
DNS name in the format
printername.dartmouth.edu.
- Leave the Queue Name field blank.
The next three fields should fill in automatically. The
Name field will show the Address information you entered
above. You can change this to something more recognizable (e.g., "Office
Printer"). The Location field may or may not show the
printer's physical location (building, etc.). The Print Using
field may show the model of the printer (e.g., HP Laserjet 4200
Series). If this field is blank, select the manufacturer's name from
the pull-down list, select your particular printer model, then click the
Add button to return to the Printer List window.
Note: If the printer model is not listed, you will need to
install the proper drivers that often come on a CD with the printer, or they
can be downloaded from the manufacturers' Web site.
To print directly to a printer using Mac OS X version 10.4.x, follow the
steps below:
- Select Utilities from the Go menu.
Double-click Printer Setup Utility.
- In the Printer List window, click Add.
- In the Printer Browser window, click IP Printer.
- Leave the Protocol setting as the default, which
is Line Printer Daemon (LPD).
- In the Address field, enter the printer's
DNS name in the format
printername.dartmouth.edu.
- Leave the Queue Name field blank.

To print directly to a printer using Mac OS X version 10.3.x or less, follow
these steps:
- Select Utilities from the Go menu.
Double-click Printer Setup Utility.
- In the Printer List window, click Add.
- From the top pull-down menu, select IPP
Printing.
- Select LPD/LPR from the Printer Type
field.
- In the Printer Address field, enter the DNS
name of the printer in the format
printername.dartmouth.edu.
- Leave the Queue Name field blank.
- Under Print Using, select the name of the
manufacturer (e.g., HP, Xerox, etc.), then select your
particular printer from the list. Click the Add button to
return to the Printer List window. Note: If the printer
is not listed, you will need to install the proper printer drivers.
There are some newer printers at Dartmouth, such as the HP Color Laserjet
2600n printers, that cannot be configured for direct IP printing. If
that is the case, you will need to add the printer using the Bonjour (formerly
called Rendezvous) protocol; see below. To use the printer, your
computer must be plugged into the Ethernet network, as
the wireless network does not work for these printers.
- Install the printer driver from the printer's software CD.
- Select Utilities from the Go
menu. Double-click Printer Setup Utility.
- In the Printer List window, click Add.
- For Mac OS X 10.4, select the Default Browser tab.
Your Bonjour zone (generally the building the printer is
located in) shows up automatically. For Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier, select
Rendezvous in the first field in the Printer
List window.
- Select your printer from the list, then click Add. Your
printer will now appear in the Printer List.
There are some older printers at Dartmouth, such as Apple LaserWriter
printers, that cannot be configured for direct IP printing. If that is the
case, you will need to add the printer using the AppleTalk protocol; see
below.
To print to a printer using the AppleTalk protocol using Mac OS X
version 10.4.x or higher, follow these steps:
- Select Utilities from the Go menu.
Double-click Printer Setup Utility.
- In the Printer List window, click Add.
- In the Printer Browser window, click Default Browser, then
click More Printers...
- In the first pull-down menu, select AppleTalk.
- Your AppleTalk Zone (generally the building the printer is
located in) often shows up automatically. If it does not, click the second
pull-down menu under the AppleTalk pull-down menu and select
AppleTalk Network. Select the appropriate
Zone from that list, then click Choose.
- Select your printer from the list, then click Add. Your
printer will now appear in the Printer List.
To print to a printer using the AppleTalk protocol using Mac OS X
version 10.3.x or lower, follow these steps:
- Select Utilities from the Go
menu. Double-click Printer Setup Utility.
- In the Printer List window, click Add.
- From the top pull-down menu, select AppleTalk.
- Your AppleTalk Zone (generally the building the printer is
located in) often shows up automatically. If it does not, click the second
pull-down menu under the AppleTalk pull-down menu and click
AppleTalk Network. Select the appropriate Zone from that
list, then click Choose.
- Select your printer from the list, then click Add. Your
printer will now appear in the Printer List.
Note: For printers that can be printed to directly, we
strongly recommend not using AppleTalk. AppleTalk is no
longer supported by Apple Computer.
