Support for Windows Operating Systems

Peter Kiewit Computing Services provides support for the Windows XP Professional (SP2) and Windows Vista operating systems. We do not provide support for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP Home, Windows Vista Home, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000, or any of the Windows Server versions.

There are two versions of Windows XP: Windows XP Professional for business users and Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Home Edition lacks the robust network support of Windows XP Professional, and does not work well on the Dartmouth network. For more information on both of these products, see Microsoft's Web site.

There are several editions of Windows Vista. For more information on each of these products, see Microsoft's Web site. Dartmouth's Peter Kiewit Computing Services supports the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Vista. If you have questions about Windows Vista or need help installing Windows XP Professional, please contact the Computing Help Desk or your department's computing support office.

Dartmouth has entered into an agreement with Microsoft that allows Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to purchase upgrades to the Microsoft operating system on their computer for a significantly reduced price. For faculty and staff, this applies only to the computers that are owned by Dartmouth; not personal purchases. If your computer is running a version of a Microsoft operating system that is not supported, please contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's computing support office to see if your hardware can be upgraded.

In addition, the Computing Help Desk or your department's computing support office can tell you about other software that is available for the Windows operating system. For example, Dartmouth has an agreement with Microsoft that allows Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to purchase some Microsoft products at a significantly reduced price. This includes software that Microsoft has developed for Windows. If you are interested in obtaining the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) for your Windows computer, please contact Computer Sales and Service at 646-3249 for pricing information.

Currently, Windows XP Professional is the recommended operating system for faculty and staff. Windows Vista is the recommended operating system for incoming students.

If you have questions, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's computing support office.
