Handy Thunderbird Customizations

General Configuration Options

Thunderbird provides many different user configuration options that allow you to set up your mail the way you want. To review these options:

  • In Thunderbird for Windows, select Options from the Tools menu.
  • In Thunderbird for the Macintosh, select the Preferences command from the Thunderbird menu.

Server Settings

To configure how often Thunderbird will look for new mail, select Account Settings from the Tools menu, then select Server settings. The default setting is 10 minutes. You can change it to one minute by changing the time next to Check for new messages every ___ minutes. Note that, unlike BlitzMail, Thunderbird does not automatically refresh your In Box when new messages are received.

DND Name Lookup

To configure Thunderbird to read the DND when you look up a name:

  1. Click the Address Book icon.
  2. Select New, then LDAP directory from the File menu. The Directory Server Properties window will appear. Enter the following information in the appropriate fields:
    1. Name: Dartmouth LDAP
    2. Hostname: ldap.dartmouth.edu
    3. Base DN: dc=dartmouth,dc=edu
    4. Port number: 389
  3. Click OK.
  4. Close the Address Book.
  5. Next, select Account Settings from the Tools menu.
  6. Click Composition & Addressing under the Addressing section, then click Use a different LDAP server and select Dartmouth LDAP in the pop-up window.
  7. Click OK.
