How Do I Configure My Account in a POP3 E-mail Client?

< Previous | Next >

POP3 e-mail programs require the following information when being configured. Note that where this information is to be entered varies from program to program.

  • Name: Enter your real name (for example, Joe Q. Public) as you want it to appear in the From field when people receive e-mail from you.
  • E-mail Address or Return Address: This is the address others will use to send e-mail to you, such as when they reply to one of your e-mail messages (for example, Joe.Q.Public@dartmouth.edu). Be sure to use your full Dartmouth Name Directory (DND) name; nicknames are not guaranteed to remain unique, and delivery of mail addressed to a nickname is not guaranteed.
  • Host (also referred to as outgoing mail or SMTP): The host for outgoing mail for all Dartmouth users is mailhub.dartmouth.edu.
  • Make sure to enable SSL for both outgoing (SMTP) and incoming mail.
  • POP3 Account (also referred to as incoming mail or POP3): Since Dartmouth has a number of mail servers, you will need to find out which server your mailbox is on. There are two ways to determine this:
  • Send a BlitzMail message to yourself. You can use a public computer if you do not have BlitzMail installed on your computer.
  • Open the message you sent to yourself. From the Options menu, select Verbose Header. Look for the line titled Message-id; it will look similar to: Message-id:24603114@newdasher.dartmouth.edu.

In this case, the POP3 or incoming mail server would be newdasher.dartmouth.edu.

The POP3 account would be Joe.Q.Public

If you have access to a Web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, see Locate Your BlitzMail Server.

Note: Your account may be moved to another server without advance notice, as it may be necessary to reduce the mail load on a server for maintenance purposes. If this happens, your mail will not be delivered to your POP3 e-mail program until you change your program's configuration to look at the new server.
