Notify

< Previous | Next >

Notify is a utility that works with BlitzMail to alert you of new e-mail messages and BlitzMail Bulletins. By default, as long as the BlitzMail application has been launched and someone has logged into BlitzMail, Notify will display an alert for any new e-mail or Bulletins. If you wish to receive an alert for your new e-mail messages on your own personal computer, even if you are not currently logged into BlitzMail, follow the instructions below.

For Windows

To activate Notify for Windows, click Start, ProgramsBlitzMail, then Notify. Select Add Name, then enter your BlitzMail Name and Password. Under Site, select the appropriate organization, then click OK. Your name should appear in the Always listen for: box. Click the BlitzMail Notification Active box, then select any of the options for being notified. Click Close.

If you are using a Windows computer that is not normally connected to the Dartmouth network when the computer is turned on (e.g., not connected via an Ethernet cable or a wireless connection), you will need to change the configurations of Notify. Click Start, ProgramsBlitzMail, then Notify. Click the Configure button and remove the check from the Assume full-time network connection box.

For the Macintosh

On a Macintosh running Mac OS X, Notify is comprised of two programs: Notify Background and Notify Settings. With versions of BlitzMail earlier than version 2.8, the Notify Background utility has to be configured to start automatically when your computer starts in order for Notify to work. To ensure you have the newest Macintosh version of BlitzMail installed, see the BlitzMail for Mac OS X software downloads Web page.

If you are using a version of BlitzMail earlier than version 2.8 and cannot upgrade, do the following to enable the Notify Background utility to start automatically. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu, then Accounts. Click on your account name under My Account, then select Startup Items (or Login Items) and click the + (plus) sign below the These items will open automatically when you log in: box. Navigate to where the Notify Background file was installed (usually the BlitzMail folder in Applications) and double-click on the Notify Background file, or highlight it and click Add to add it to the Startup Items list. Put a check in the Hide box beside Notify Background. Restart your computer to start Notify Background.

Once your computer is restarted, you can configure Notify Settings. Navigate to Applications, open the BlitzMail folder, and select Notify Settings. Click Add Name, and enter your BlitzMail Name and Password. Under Site, select the appropriate organization, then click OK. Your name should appear in the Notification options for: box. In the BlitzMail Notification box, toggle the switch to On, then select any of the options for being notified. Click Close.
