History

BlitzMail development began in November 1987 and was available for use in the summer of 1988. In 1991, the system was modified to support multiple servers, and in 1993, it was extended to support mail folders. In 1994, BlitzMail was made available outside of Dartmouth and the first non-Dartmouth sites got up and running.

Subsequent upgrades to the system have improved interoperability with other e-mail systems (for example, by adding support for MIME format messages). Today, the BlitzMail servers support clients using the POP3 and IMAP protocols, as well as the native BlitzMail client. In 2008, 20 years after the first BlitzMail release, the BlitzMail servers still handle the mail for over 97% of Dartmouth's students, faculty, and staff.
