Frequently Asked Questions

Does BlitzMail Support IMAP or POP?

Yes, the BlitzMail server does support both POP and IMAP, so users can view their mailbox on the Dartmouth mail server using whatever client they prefer. It's even possible to switch back and forth between BlitzMail and IMAP clients at will; both clients will see the same mail. The native BlitzMail client-server protocol is actually neither IMAP nor POP. The protocol is more like IMAP than POP, since all mail is stored in mail folders on the server, but includes some additional features (like server-side mailing lists) that are not available in IMAP.

I Have a Mail Account With An Internet Service Provider; Can I Use BlitzMail?

No, since most Internet Service Providers don't have BlitzMail systems.

What Is the Difference Between BlitzMail Bulletins and Usenet News?

BlitzMail Bulletins are used to communicate from a single authorized person to many readers; Usenet news is used to communicate among many users, all of whom can post messages. Bulletin posters must be authorized to post; each Bulletin topic has a limited number of users that can post. The Bulletin system is ideal for posting announcements and official information, but is not well suited to being a discussion forum. Bulletins have a friendlier user interface than news, with more interesting topic names, easily accessible information about topics, and instant notification when a Bulletin is posted to a monitored topic.
