Computing Services discourages the distribution of unsolicited electronic mail (e-mail) to large mailing lists; such a use is wasteful of network resources and may be considered an invasion into the privacy of recipients' e-mail boxes. Before sending an unsolicited e-mail message that will be distributed across campus, or even farther, think about whether all those people are really interested in hearing from you. If you do send unsolicited messages to people on your personal electronic mailing list, some of them may ask you to remove their names from your list. You must comply with these requests before reusing your list or you will be in violation of the Dartmouth College Information Technology Policy.
If you have an announcement that would be of interest to the Dartmouth community, try using Dartmouth Daily Updates. Log into the system and enter the information. Public Affairs staff will review the posting, and if appropriate, will send it as part of the Dartmouth Daily Updates e-mail to the group(s) you specified.
In addition, you may not use the Group Lists provided in BlitzMail 's Address window to distribute unsolicited mail, unless you are a member of the group you are addressing. These lists are provided for the convenience of the members of those groups, not to serve as a source of addresses for mass electronic mailings.
If you are going to send an e-mail to a large number of people, make sure to use the "Keep Recipient List Private" feature to prevent people from responding to you and including everyone else on the original message. Also, use the carbon copy feature, rather than putting everyone's name in the "To" line because this will take up less space on Dartmouth's e-mail servers.
For guidelines and Dartmouth's policy on electronic mass mailings or for help in setting up mass mailings and group lists, contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send an e-mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or contact your department's IT support office.
